I'm still trying to figure out the logic behind this, other than not wanting to bring in another carry over from FFXI.

If you're talking about why people create alts, most common asnwer is — they want to see different characters doing different stuff. It's and RPG, not everyone see their characters as swiss knife. Seeing muscular highlander doing femine animations while wearing a robe with a skirt might look very dumb to someone, but if they want to try a healer, they can create someone more fitting for this kind of job. I have a friend who created and capped 5 different rouges in WoW, just to have different races and transmogs.
Other side of this is that people love questing, once you've reached cap in FF, there is no quests left, game lacks of good amount of sidequests and most of them are so easy, that you can clear a bunch of them in a short time.

No, I'm talking about why SE decided to Fort Knox the concept of alts in this game, which has been a convenient non game breaking thing for the last 20yrs in MMOs, and it's especially a thing in FFXI. I have alts as well, in fact my forum account is of my alt, and it'd be great if I could transfer things between this and my main character.

I doubt that they dezigned it intentionally, probably just didn't really think about it or there is something on a technical level what doesn't allow them to make keeping alts more comfortable - our noodle code isn't a big secret really. Plus, it's hard to say what should be done to begin with because different people have different view on that. For instance, I can agree with the fact that things like housing and event glamours should be shareable, but quests and achievments, imo, should not. At the same time there can be people who thinks that housing should be separated and achievments should be shareable. I would literally give up every possibility of sharing anything with my alt for the ability to just mail stuff to her.I doubt that they dezigned it intentionally, probably just didn't really think about it or there is something on a technical level what doesn't allow them to make keeping alts more comfortable - our noodle code isn't a big secret really. Yeeeeeaaah, this one certainly could me much easier. I'm not strictly against of limiting emails to friends-only, but not being able to add alts to friend list with this limitation is kind of painful. You don't always have a 3rd person that can act as middleman.
Wait... What?! We can't mail stuff to alts???
Well, after some google search on how friend invite works, now I understand (still kind of new to this game). This is a total disappointment to me. I've always enjoyed my family of alts in MMOs, and I've never thought this sort of limitation could ever exist...
So, I'm going to switch my subscription to Entry when time comes then. Maybe voting with my wallet would help to get the voice heard? Maybe?

While it's not a perfect solution, if you have multiple alts on one world then you can sign them all up to the same FC and use the company chest as a middle step to pass things between characters.Wait... What?! We can't mail stuff to alts???

Or (particularly if you're on an entry sub with alts in different worlds) you can pester a friend to hold stuff for you. You can only pass five items and 1 million gil per trade though.
Most people in FFXIV do not raid. The devs have said so. This is not a raid-centric game. And I say that as someone who will do a raid at least once just for the experience.
As for this thread, I completely agree with the OP. I’m an altaholic. In every MMO I play, I have multiple alts. Variety is the spice of life. I cannot imagine playing one character and one character only for a decade. Holy crap, that’s boring!
FFXIV should be more alt friendly, especially when games like SWTOR and GW2 - and lets be honest - pretty much every single MMO on the market today , let’s you do everything the OP listed.
Making alts is part of the MMO experience.

Honestly, if they didnt make the Hrothgar, or any type of Playable Beast Race, I would have been 100% fine and happy with my Miqote here.
But since they did.....and its currently Male Only, and Im rather attached to my Female Glams...I made a Male ALT
