I use a pad, and I don't have any problem.
If you prefer, you can use a macro. A macro doesn't need Enter.

I have 10,000 needles,
I'm not a weaver,
and I'm not scared to use them.

But you cant target with macros, so you cant do /cure <p4> like you can in XI. Only good for <t>'s
Even with gamepad you have to enter, but i dont even use the AOE there, i dont even know how to toggle AOE with gamepad I just have 2 macros, one /aoe on, and another /aoe off which I use often to switch so the enter is a pain annoying choice.
I can understand it on somethings such as allowing you to toggle enemies prior to spell, it lets you have a secondary target as I could be hitting enemy, i hit cure, it switches to secondary target toggle, and I can pick a player.
But theres no need for it when using mouse + pt menu.

To change between AOE/NO AOE with a pad you had to click the "emotes/BR"
you don't have to enter anything with a pad. focus a target, click the cure, if the target is an enemy you go automatically in subtarget and you can choose a friendly target.
with macro, use
/ac "Cure II" <st>
so easy.
