Comparing your characters to others

Is there an easy way to compare your stats, and items to other players in game?
Including their other jobs and such.

Yes (levels) and no (gear/items). If you right-click someone's name in a player search window (or linkshell, party, free company list) you can select an option that'll show you all of their job levels. Out of game, you can look up anyone's character on the lodestone and see what they have leveled, but the only gear you'll see is whatever they were wearing the last time the Lodestone took a snapshot. Stats are also present on the Attributes tab, but like the gear, it's just a snapshot of whatever they were wearing at the time.

There's no interface to compare yourself against them, though, and I'm not sure why you'd want that.

I might be wrong but can't you do an item comparison between your gear and that of the person targetted for stats comparisons? Though obviously you'd need to do this for each individual gear piece (unless I'm making it up lol).

But yeah in terms of an overall comparison, no such thing exists. Variation in things like job levels between characters has no actual influence on anything really though, so it's not like you're missing out on important info

Oh, I did forget to mention that sometimes you can just look at peoples' HP, depending on the context (if you're the same role and same level, like in a dungeon).

If I'm on BRD, and I'm in a dungeon with another BRD, I can tell roughly how their gear stacks up to mine by how much HP they have. Admittedly, this leaves out accessories, since those don't currently affect HP, but I think they said they're adding VIT onto accessories in ShB. Melees will have slightly more HP, and mages slightly less, but you can still get the general idea.

This is really the only player comparison that I do, and it's so I can roll my eyes and prepare for a garbage run when I see the other DPS has like 3/4 of my HP pool, or when the tank has nearly the same HP as a DPS (or, heaven forbid, even less!).

You can inspect other characters to see their gear. It doesn't total all their stats (except for average item level) but you can see the stats of each individual gear piece and compare it to your own. It's limited to what they're currently wearing, though, so no checking what they would have with a different job or different gear set.

To add to this, you might be able to check their character on the lodestone as well. You will see all the stats there provided it's showing you the correct job.

One issue with wanting to know what someone's stats would be on another job is that it depends on what they equip. For instance, I have two different gear sets for each combat job (except WAR, which I'm still leveling) because I'm working on relic weapons for each of them. One gear set includes my relic, for when that's what I'm working on. But since the relics aren't maxed out yet, augmented ironworks weapons are still stronger, so I have another gear set with that weapon for when I'm working on anything unrelated to the relic. There is no single answer to what my stats are as a Ninja, or a Black Mage, or whatever, because it depends on what I'm working on at the time.

When looking at your own character on Lodestone, can you change the job/class to see the attributes with the currently equipped gear? Or do I have to log into the game and switch jobs? At that point, I can just look at the character attributes in game.

In-game only. The lodestone isn't smart enough to know your other gearsets.
