I know, but remember it isn't REALLY a first-person camera. The camera perspective doesn't move to your character's eyes, it moves inside your character's head. So the original camera behavior doesn't change, just the positioning.
I've had people argue that it's realistic because you can't look straight up in real life either. Yes I knew these people, no they weren't joking.
Uhh... I mean I've had periods in my life where I couldn't turn my head at all, but this was due to injury not biological limitation.
Pardon me if this might come off as blunt, but its not the butt nor the 'front' that is usually a problem. Its the 'undercarriage', so to speak. The camera itself specifically locks as soon as it gets to a certain range to the player model. It's not an issue of it being limited or clipping through the ground, because the camera will 'slide' across the ground up till the lockpoint. And if its an issue of 'making the model disappear', they can do this already by using the First Person View which removes the player model from your personal view. So the limitation seems arbitrary...unless you consider what I said. Consider that some other MMOJRPGs have a similar camera limitation for that specific reason, or the whole 'upskirt' creeper thing in Japan is (or was) a cultural phenomenon (albeit minor one) that theyre not fond of.
You can't look straight up because there is a ghost on your shoulders holding your head down.

I played some games that can do it by changing the axis to the camera when it touches the ground, instead of sliding, so that it can look up 90º.
You think you do, but you really dont.![]()
However i am also curious why we cant move camera freely, maybe because of console version of the game, they made it that way so its not too wild on the controller.
