Kalise did a pretty good job of it.

Kalise did a pretty good job of it.

I've said it in other threads, but I didn't specify it in this one, so to clarify; yes, I did play WoW, from Classic through early Legion. And while Classic had options, most of them were high situational or useless. I should also point out that different talent specs in WoW are functionally different classes built on similar roots, like scholar and summoner in FFXIV. so saying that frost mage and fire mage are options is like saying that bard and machinist are options.
You can be snarky as much as you wish, it doesn't change the fact that you were wrong and everyone can see it.

Ahahahahahahahahahahaha xD
Back in Classic WoW:
* Warrior was the only tank. Yes Druids and Paladins had a tank spec. But only Warrior was allowed to Tank because the other 2 were garbo.
* Priest and Paladin were the only healers. Yes, Shamans and Druids had healing specs. But Priest (Specifically Holy. Discipline was garbo) and Paladin was just way better than them.
* There was 1 spec for each class. Rogue was Combat (Subtlety was PvP only. Assassination was garbo), Mage was Fire (Frost was garbo. Arcane was ultra garbo outside of like 21 points to access Presence of Mind for PoM Pyro in PvP). Warlock was Affliction (Demonology was garbo. Destruction was garbo), Hunter was Marksman (Beastmastery was garbo. Survival was ultra hot fiery garbo). Shaman was Elemental (Enhancement was garbo outside of Legendary Sulfuras in PvP). Warrior was Arms only for PvP though (PvE only Prot was good. Fury was just total garbo). Paladin was only Holy (Prot was garbo. Ret was garbo and was literally used 1x in a 40 man raid purely to spend their entire time buffing everyone with single target buffs). Druid was Feral (Balance was for memes about being OOM all the time)
Classic WoW's classes were pretty terrible. But this was before DPS meters became a thing and where actually playing the game at levels 1-59 was actually fun. So you could get away with playing sub-optimally because no-one would really care if you wiped 400 times in Wailing Caverns (Level 16ish dungeon) or Deadmines (Level 15ish dungeon). Since it was a fun and engaging experience and you weren't trying to spam out 4000000000 dungeons per hour, you went into a dungeon EXPECTING it to take 1-2 hours to complete, even the low level ones.
Essentially, it's not the class design that's the issue, it's the game design where things are more and more becoming rush-fests so that max DPS matters, that meta matters, that duties need to be no longer than 5 seconds in duration so you can spam them a million times per minute.
Partially to appeal to "Casuals" that don't actually have time to play games, but still want to play a genre of game that is literally based around requiring time (Which is why MMO's often utilize subscription fees. Paying for the game each month is the consolation for having a game that you can play for hundreds of hours per month)
Actually... Being a full on healer can be fun. If the mechanics of healing and supporting your party are actually engaging and interesting.
Being a full on healer only sucks when the options are: Press 1 oGCD every minute or so and sit on your hands for the other 59s. Or spam a single heal spell (Cure II/Adloquium/Benefic II) for every GCD to deal with incoming damage.
However, if you're comboing together healing skills, managing MP restoration CD's and MP efficiency, applying protective buffs to allies, damage buffs to allies, debuffing enemies and popping CD's for Tankbusters/Raidbusters to mitigate damage before healing people back up as well as dispelling negative effects from allies and positive effects from enemies. Then you're able to have fun despite being a "Pure Healer"
Same with being a meat shield tank. It can be fun if the mechanics surrounding it are engaging and interesting.
It's boring when all you do is spam Taunt and press a CD every minute or so when a Tankbuster comes in.
But if you're managing active mitigation skills to reduce fluff damage, rolling CD's to also deal with fluff damage while making sure to have enough remaining to deal with TB's, shielding allies from harm when mechanics target them, debuffing the boss to increase their vulnerability to allow your team to hit them harder, or weakening the bosses attacks to mitigate the damage they can deal to your party, while also positioning the boss to keep your allies safe while letting them deal maximal damage as well as for mechanics (Such as moving the boss onto spike traps, or taking them through streams of molten metal that decrease their armour but increase their damage) and having to pick up adds that spawn, interrupt key skills used by adds/bosses and co-ordinating with your co-tank to swap targets for boss mechanics.
Then you can have actual fun playing a "Meat Shield" tank.
There's a lot of potential to have fun outside of purely having DPS rotations to Healer/Tank roles. Many other games actually achieve this.
The only way these "Pure Heal/Meat Shield" roles become boring, is when they're set up to be boring with limited actual gameplay. Which is the case with FFXIV where the actual Healing and Tanking aspects of the game are near non-existent and mostly focused around popping a CD for scripted bursts of damage.

This just isn't true. Lots of people like to heal, myself included.
We just don't want to be pacifists. Being a healer does not mean you can't contribute to damage. Healer=/=Pacifist
Thanks for the good laugh with this topic, always funny to see where this "only DPS matters" meta leads to.
did you play FFXI? Then you would know, to atleast the golden days where lvl cap 75 we healers, did - not - dps . We were standing in the back, using protect and shell, MAYBE casting a debuff on the mob and then it was standing around healing people. Even summoner and rdm was used to heal and spam haste and whatnnot, how do I know? I played FFXI for YEARS and mained whm and rdm. So comparing FFXIV to FFXI doesnt make any sense. FFXI is NOT FFXIV. FFXI was a lot harder, it took MONTHs to level up certain classes, if you even got an invite to a party.
And in 2+ weeks 5.0 will finally come out, I think after that we can complain about anything. Why start complaining already before we even had any experience? I remember how before 4.0 came out all the "whm is dead" talk and all the panic and hate that came along with it. Start a riot for once when its relevant and not BEFORE we have on-hand experience. You like ffxi? go play ffxi, you like wow, go play wow. FFXIV is FFXIV. Dont like it? Dont play it.
To be honest I'm curious what's gonna become of SCH now.
They went from being a cool plague doctor with fairy sidekick to full on doctor fairy now in Shadowbringers, I'm curious if the job will feel as rewarding as it was in HW with its DPS utility.
I main WAR so I personally don't have a feeling towards it, but as my partner mains SCH I can tell she's all kinds of upset.

TIL I am a nobody.
I actually would prefer to be a full-time healer, well as close as one as possible. Unfortunately that is not the case in this game so I dps. Not everyone dpses because they want to, I'd bet a lot of us do it simply because we don't want to fall asleep while healing.
