[Steam] PS4 pad is partially working (face buttons only)

I'm playing on Steam and I have gamepad enabled. I'm using a PS4 controller, however the only option in-game that it's reading is a XB360 controller. I'm not sure if that's relevant, but it is what the settings are as a preface.

So when I play, all face buttons, dpad, and analog stick work fine. But the shoulder buttons are unresponsive. Whether I change the button configuration or have it at the defaults, I can't get the shoulder buttons to work in-game.

I've tried looking up fixes and can't find anything quite like my situation. Is anyone familiar w/ this? Is it b/c I'm using PS4 pad on Steam (Steam doesn't natively support it, I believe)? Should I change my controller settings for FF14 in Steam Big Picture?

Any and all help/input is appreciated.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

How long have you been having this issue? Have you had issues with the PS4 controller in the past? Does the game have trouble reading another kind of controller?

    Hope to see you online!

Since I most recently re-installed a few months ago (I never tried using a controller/gamepad in my previous FF14 stints). I haven't tried using my XB360 controller as I'd prefer that not to be the only fix. But I know it's a troubleshooting step, so I'll try it in the next day or so and get back to you. While I'm at it, I'll check my Steam Big Picture controller settings as well.

Thank you for the reply Dr_Cheesesteak.

I believe Steam can natively use the PS4 controller, but it may have to be configured in Big Picture Mode first. If your Xbox 360 controller works without issue, you may have to configure it with Steam. Open Steam and select 'Steam' in the top left corner then go to 'Settings'. In the next window, select 'Controller' and then 'General Controller Settings'. Here, make sure 'Playstation Configuration Support' is checked (if it is already, try unchecking it and checking it again).

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

So, regardless of Big Picture settings, in-game settings, and if I use X360 or PS4 pad, it's the same result.

HOWEVER, I may have misinterpreted the issue. It may not be that the shoulder buttons aren't working, but rather I somehow can't figure out how to make the hotbars setup for them properly?

So, L1/LB is defaulted to auto-run. And that works fine on both PS4 and X360 pads. But L2, R1, R2, etc are all bound to hotbar-oriented buttons. So I'm starting to think it's more of a UI/hotbar issue than a controller issue? Do I somehow need to have the UI/hotbars look like they do on console?

Thank you for the update Dr_Cheesesteak.

I think I see what you mean. Go to the character configuration screen and see if you are set to the mouse/keyboard mode. If so, you can select the button in the top left (it looks like a switch).

I tried setting the control scheme to this and used a controller. The R2 and L2 buttons didn't do anything and is similar to how you described it. Try switching that in the character configuration.

Dude...something so simple and I didn't even think to look at other settings/config menus. That worked! Thanks a lot.

Thanks for helping a noob like myself. The exciting part is it's like playing a new game now lol. Gotta get used to new shortcuts, less buttons, new menus, etc. Should be fun. =D
