New at being a Carpenter and at FFXIV

So i'm kind of confused, i've learned the mechanics of fishing and mining pretty easily. My main class is a carpenter. I get how to create, because of the first quest i did. But now I have no clue how to move on with it, I buy logs from an NPC, but I cant use them? Do I do a certain thing to cut them so I can use them? How do I gather the materials for a carpenter, Is there something Im missing? The tutorial or NPC advice I get in the Game doesnt seem to help me much. I would appreciate ANY advice from anyone so I can progress as a carpenter. It would be much appreciated.

If you're trying to get the ingredients yourself, logs and such will come from botany; since you've said you know fishing and mining, I won't go into any detail about botany.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but to craft something you equip the appropriate tool--in this case, a saw--, open your menu, select 'Synthesize', click on one of the materials boxes (below the 'Clear' button) and add items in from your inventory. When you're done adding items, hit the Esc. key (or click the Return button). Then select which tool to use (Main Hand - Saw, Off Hand - Claw Hammer if you have one equipped). Select which item you want to make and confirm your selection (assuming you have sufficient shards/crystals to synthesize it), then you do the crafting minigame.

    Hi Chelle,

As Raldo has said, to gather ingredients for carpentry/woodworking, it is highly recommended you take up Botany by purchasing a Weathered Hatchet.

You may find a combination of logs, branches, and many food ingredients.

The default method to open your menu should be the Home key, there may be other methods in place to begin synthesis.

Do a synthesis with the maple log as the only ingredient. You can also do it in bulk with 3 logs for 3 lumber, but you won't get any more xp than doing one log, so stick to one if you need the xp.

Have you discovered Local Leves yet? These are the best way to start out with crafting as you will gain experience and recipes without the need to acquire the ingredients because they are already provided for you. You won't actually receive the item you craft but you will gain XP and knowledge with no risk. For example, go to the main desk in your city of choice and talk to the person offering local leves. Pick Carpentry and they will offer you different quests for your craft. Pay attention to level requirements and make sure it's appropriate for your level. Then just go find the NPC specified in the leve and talk to them. They'll give you the components and you can then start crafting. Once you complete the leve talk to them again for the reward.

Another good side of leves is they will reward you with materials you can use to do more synthesis.
