    New Player Experience (Skills)

    Hey everyone,

The wife and I bought this game nearly a month ago and jumped in blind. Been playing it on and off now over the month and we have been enjoying the game mostly so far. We are around level 25 on two classes but notice one major thing. We seem to have almost no actual attack skills or even fun skills to use.

We looked at the class action skills that we can unlock later but it doesn't give us much hope. They all seem basically the same(Ex does X more damage and maybe has a small debuff/buff). The role skills seem even worse as they are as generic as you can get.

I don't want to sound so negative to the game as we are enjoying it but we are struggling to want to renew our sub after seeing a pretty bland game so far.

Does the game get a bit better later on? Do we get a bit more choices in action skills or even able to merge classes/skills into a hybrid style class? Do we have talent trees or anything similar to that? With the way the game unlocks "Features" its hard to tell whats coming if you don't know whats there.

    Thanks

All of the classes are very barebones to start, but you'll have plenty enough buttons to push by the time you hit 50.

There isn't really anything to differentiate a player from another using the same class like talent trees, though (But considering the balance trainwreck so many other MMOs become as a result of too much choice, it's probably for the better).

They look the same, but make the game much more interesting to play.
If you ever played wow and has a idea how it looks like there, I would say that classes in FFXIV are funnier to play with.

In the next expansion (which is coming in 1 month) they are going to rework some of the jobs and also decrease the GCD from 2.5 to 2.0 sec if I'm not wrong, which will make it even more engaging to play especially on the job you are currently playing gladiator-paladin, and I am going to play paladin in next expansion as well. Right now you are going through the worst time, early levels and experience is awful in this game, I dropped it few times before I decided to give it a solid try, lvled up, gone through the story and like the game more than some action combat mmorpu I played before.
If you are really bored I would recommend you to try out playing on a controller, it gives that extra fun to the game and I play on ps4 controller myself on PC.

Take a look at the Job Guide, which contains a comprehensive list of each Job's actions at 70.

In XIV, we have "classes" and "jobs". Classes are quite limited in what they can do, and at Lv30 you will be given the opportunity to upgrade your class to the corresponding Job. As a GLA, you will become a PLD and gain access to important and useful actions that GLA just doesn't get. Once you unlock the job and equip your Soul of the Paladin (a crystal that goes in the final equipment slot on your character sheet), you'll be able to see the full PLD action list in game.

This is not happening. The base GCD will continue to be 2.5s.

Um... Your profile says you're a lv29 Gladiator and it sounds like you haven't unlocked your Job, Paladin, yet ^^

Once you do, you're going to see more abilities than you'll know what to do with. In fact, reducing button bloat for certain jobs is one of the things the devs are trying to do in the upcoming expansion.

To illustrate the difference, here's Gladiator, and here's Paladin. And here's what Paladin will look like next month, after the 5.0 patch.

Anyways, in case you weren't aware, all the original AAR Jobs start as basic Classes and at level 30 get upgraded to Jobs. It's a remnant of the vanilla FF14, or 1.0, and is probably only kept around for the sake of legacy players. Starting with Heavensward, all new jobs have been designed to function standalone.

They also get flashier to the point many have had to limit what skills they see from others as it can become very hard to keep track of what everyone is doing and what the enemy is.

    Nuh-uh! That's unacceptable, don't listen to this.

Learning to recognise what's happening despite all VFX being turned on and maxed out is an essential element of gitting gud!

For this reason, Red Mages are always entitled to LB3 priority. It ensures that at the most critical moment of a fight, you see as little as possible and must therefore learn to rely on nothing but game-sense.

The answer is yes, it gets better. You're leveling at a slower pace too so it will seem there is less to do. The game builds you up to a full toolset, because if it was all given to you too soon it would be a bit overwhelming.

Once you get your basic AOE/cleave abilities etc it feels more open. 40+ a few pieces start to slot together 50-60 is a huge increase in gamestyle and 60-70 are like the finish touches.

    Just keep at it!

To put in perspective, the point you are at in the game is about kindergarten. Do you expect a kindergartner to be fully skilled?

You're still in the bare minimums of skills right now. Jobs add more on, you get even more 60-70. really it's hard to know if you like a class till you get to 70 since the true rotations aren't really there till then and the skills were reworked to make 70 easier to deal with. Some of the skills you're going to get don't really do anything till 70 and paired with others.

Keep at it, it gets better and if you want a preview try out the deeper dungeons (Palace of the dead).
