Quick question about retainer levels

So one of my retainers is an AST, because that was previously my main job. I decided a while ago that I was no longer going to play healer and focus more on tanking and DPS, so I won't be leveling AST into ShB.

I plan to change their job to one I will be playing, which will be GNB. If I switch them to that, or any other expansion job like RDM or something, do they start at the minimum level for those (so 60 for GNB or 50 for RDM for example) or do they start all the way down at level 1?

You have to level it up on a class to lvl 50/60 I believe, then change it to a job. It should start at that level, because there is no weapon below lvl 50/60 for it. I know for SAM I had to level it to 50, then it swapped.

Wait so since it's an AST would I have to change it to a class (like GLD for example) and then switch it to GNB? Or can I go from AST to GNB right away? It's already level 70 right now, but with a job not a class.

I don't think you can go from job to job, but I don't remember 100%. Its been 2 years since I changed mine lol.

It seems they have to be a class, unfortunately. At least I have time to level it up before then.
