This issue is also with 3.5mm cords depending on how things are set up. I don't crash when I switch either but I don't use USB but I used to have to restart the game to change from my headphones (3.5mm) to my speakers (hooked up via 3.5mm). I can now though switch audio between speakers and headphones since I've incorporated an extended male to female cord that is always plugged in.

Just wanted to add that since I didn't realize USB had a problem either (crash to desktop sounds fabulous..... lol hope that's fixed for sure!), but I saw some USB people here talking about how 3.5/other didn't have an issue per say (which imo having to restart is an issue, or at least annoyance).
Aw, well that just diminishes my hope, lol. (Speaking of USB problem, I do have a problem with using gamepad on PC that sometimes temporarily disconnects the gamepad while playing FFXIV. One good thing about using Steam is that it automatically reconnects the gamepad, but it's still an ongoing issue.)
