I'm not lacking, as I was able to perform these same recipe synths with no problem before 1.21, it is the base durability loss on every attempt that is killing my crafting, and I have tried rapid, and most of the time it fails, leaving me even less durability than before. I'm using lv28 tool, lv28 crafting based gear, and a lv28 craft, other than food, there's no other way to boost craftsmanship/magic craftsmanship beyond where I am at presently. SE needs to reduce the standard durability loss, it shouldn't be a 10-15% loss to starting durability on the default action.
The patch notes describe the synthesis change with:
'•The use of standard synthesis, rapid synthesis, or careful synthesis changes how quickly durability is consumed and how quickly progress and Quality increase.
•Standard synthesis increases progress and consumes more durability.
•Rapid synthesis does not increase Quality.
•Careful synthesis dramatically increases Quality.
•A set amount of durability is consumed regardless of whether or not the standard synthesis or careful synthesis succeeds.
By checking the remaining durability, it is now easier to determine how many synthesis attempts remain. If rapid synthesis succeeds, durability is not consumed at all.'

That is the problem with the change, it shouldn't take more durability for the default action, it should remain default and therfore a balanced action. By checking the remaining durability, I have 5-10 attempts (from start), and it is taking me 10-12 attempts to complete a recipe. Do the math, 5 attempts remaining, and 10 attempts needed to complete, means you WILL fail. I've even had recipes 10 levels below me fail because of the base durability loss now.
