It is very simple with the reliance on gcd healing apart from Benediction which had a longer cd than now(7 mins), cleric stance being something that gimped your heals to increase your damage as well as having a decent cd(10s) to turn it off, while having access to stoneskin, aero 1 and 2 being separate DoTs, being able to cross class other useful tools such as virus, eye for an eye and thunder.

To optimise whm you wanted to lower that number of gcds through regens/bene but you had to actually plan out when to Dps as you were locked with weak heals for a good length of time for encounters back then also having 3 DoTs to manage on top of giving casted stoneskins since they were hp based so cleric didn't affect it meant you were really casting a lot of different spells constantly, mp was also a bigger thing then too sometimes you had to stop casting dmg spells or risk going oom especially if you raised anybody oof were some encounters not kind if you had to use a single raise.
