New crafter with questions about cross class skills

New to this game and enjoying it. I am interested in starting two of the crafting jobs but everyone I talk to suggests that I level ALL of them "at least to 15 to get the cross crafting skills." Ok, I get the value proposition for having cross crafting skills. But I don't know the system well enough to know exactly how necessary it is that I do all of them.

My question is how critical this is that I get ALL of them? I don't mind leveling up one or two besides my main two, but I don't really have an interest in grinding out 15 levels of 6 or 7 other jobs. I'm already leveling up all of the DoL jobs.

Are there particular ones I should be focused on or it is really ALL of them? I'm doing all 3 DoL jobs and wanting to do Cullnary and Alchemy. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Leveling all of them is pretty crucial. You should at least get them all to level 50. It will not only give you a plethora of must have moves that makes hq easier, but it will also cut down cost as you will be able to craft mats from the other classes vs having to buy mats cause you cant craft them.

You might skip leveling one or two of the classes, but it is actually a really, really good idea to get ALL of the DoH classes to level 15 if you are going to do any crafting at all.
It takes no more than an hour or two at most to level a DoH class to level 15.

Later on it is not only cross-class skills that make it useful to level all classes. Nearly all of them require materials that are crafted by some other class, so by having all classes leveled you will save quite a lot of money by not having to buy stuff from the MB. That being said, Culinarian and Alchemist happens to be the DoH classes that are least dependent on other classes for materials.

This isnt nearly as much of a "grind" as you think it is. You can knock out 15 levels really quick. The easy way is to use the bonus exp you get for crafting an item for the first time(use all the bonus exp you can because most of them do stack - fc actions, manuals, food bonus, rested bonus, equipment bonuses). The guild supplier for each guild sells all the mats you need to make each item up to about level 15(CUL is the exception, their merchant doesnt stock fish - theres a fishmonger elsewhere in Limsa who has this covered). So you unlock the class, go stand by the supplier, work through one of each item(stopping for class quests is fine and will give you enough shards to make all these crafts plus some extra), and in like 30-45ish mins youll be level 15.

You can get all crafting classes to 20 in about one short day. That said, if you don't plan to get deep into crafting - and it can get very complicated at high levels - I would pay more attention to leveling your retainers up.

    Very.

There's a reason that everyone is telling you the same thing. It's really true. The level 15 skills make doing literally everything else way, waaaaaaay easier. It's also pretty quick and easy. Vendors in houses will sell you all the mats needed to level everything to 20ish for pennies.

That said, if you REALLY don't want to do it you'd probably be okay with skipping Blacksmith and Weaver. Both are important later on, but Ingenuity and Careful Synthesis 1 are less useful at lower levels.

Ok, thanks for all the consistent answers. I will get busy setting up my crafters!

Any other suggestions or ideas are very welcome. The overwhelm factor is high in this game, but we are enjoying it quite a bit. Great community, too. Thanks, all.
