If it were a nazu/military uniform, or a uniform of some kind in particular, I'd get it, but is this just the general style that was popular at the time? Because that's very different from a uniform if I'm understanding the parallels here.
It's hard to put yourself in someone else's shoes unless you are also a person whose identity has been erased at some point or another. I might 'get it' more being a part of the lgbt community who has also seen some kinds of erasure happen.

What it represents is an erasure of a human being as a human being. Imagine being enslaved and forced to wear something your master demanded you wear because they are trying to kill your identity and reprogram your mind to identify with them instead. It might be hard to imagine for some folks but I hope that you try for a moment to think about what that feels like.

An occupation is no joke. Occupiers are not friendly people trying to make life better for the folks they just conquered.

From what I understand the japanese outfit in question is a civilian outfit. My country, Ireland, has a history of 800 years of oppression from Britain. The irish don't get offended if they happen to see british civilian clothing from within that period in a game or whatever.

I am absolutely not trying to downplay the oppression the Koreans went through, but it is misleading to compare civilian clothing to a military uniform. I understand that some koreans were forced to wear these outfits but then this means a more appropriate comparison, to use WW2 again, would be the Star of David symbol that the jews were forced to wear.

You are braver than I am- when the Native American set came out I was livid, and still am, but short of traveling to all 500 tribes reservations in the united states and 600 in Canada to get chiefs signatures on a letter to present to Yoshi P at a fan fest, I don't think SE will listen in my case.

Unfortunate that this game is plagued by things like this and nothing can be done about it.

You remove the politics out of this and you've just described what it is like to be a child. Children are not given much autonomy or freedom and are constantly forced to wear certain types of clothes against their own will or even personal culture. Any school with a dress code or uniform does exactly what you describe. A Japanese-American can't just come to school in a kimono.

    *edit*

Cartoons and sitcoms taught me you guys can wear whatever you want as long as it's not inappropriate, my childhood was a lie

If the school has dress code or uniform, then no. Even a few decades ago, it was taboo to even wear shorts to school. Some schools don't have uniforms or strict dress codes but at the same time, children rarely get to choose which schools they get to attend.
Children don't have much power over their own lives, even in the land of the free. Korean children couldn't wear what they wanted in school in the 30's? Well, that's not exactly different from most other countries apart from perhaps the punishments.

I would appreciate links to actual historical information related to this, in addition to your own social media links. Or like, even keywords to look up. I'm not familiar enough with the topic to do further research.

As far as I can tell, you've simply called it "the occupation". Does it have a more specific historical name, to more easily find references? I would be genuinely interested in learning more. Unfortunately, I realize that certain events in that time period have been... uh... deliberately obscured, so it may not have a proper name.

Regardless of whether more information is readily available, this is unfortunate to hear.
