so is the point of your post to raise awareness of distasteful comments towards other players for people that are potentially upset about said comments? perhaps i'm being bold, but i think they already know.I moved data centres due to not wanting to come across people that were in said Free Company. The "silly M A C R O" you refer to I was displeased with not only hit me in the apparent "b**thurt" area but I feel I wasn't the only one potentially, if I have the same feelings why can't others.
Except, they do?Words only mean stuff because we attribute meanings to them. Without that, they're merely pixels on a screen, sounds resonating from vocal chords, etc.
With the invention of the internet, every word in existence has a "normal meaning" and an "internet meaning".
When they say something about cancer, they don't mean cells mutated to have uncontrolled cell division.
When they say something about autism, they don't mean the neurological condition by the same name.
Why else would they be using those exact words?

That...Words only mean stuff because we attribute meanings to them. Without that, they're merely pixels on a screen, sounds resonating from vocal chords, etc.

...really isn't true.
An expression doesn't become a thing or funny to someone unless they also find some relief in it's actual meaning - internet 'meme sayings' have their value because they don't just 'trigger a lol', the people repeating them also somewhat agree with the underlying statement's meaning, intent, and/or tone - that is in fact what triggers that lol...
It's basically the same as 'racist jokes'... nobody actually says a racist joke unless they actually agree with it... and they then just use 'it's just a joke' as cover. It gives them an 'approved way out' of being called on their own intentions by others also 'in on the intent'... (the same note applies to sexist jokes and so on).
If you don't harbor some actual ill-will, and a disrespect for people 'on the spectrum' - you don't make an 'autism joke'. You just... don't. It simply will not occur to the mind of a person who isn't biased to even think of that statement.
The 'cancer' one is basically a 'way out' because it sounds more severe than any harm a sane person would actually wish... but it's just using exaggeration to mask ill intent.
We actually know that... it's not that 'internet meanings are different'... it's actually that the 'internet meaning' mindset is radicalizing us offline... Extremism on all sides of every topic is rising, as the internet is teaching us to disconnect ourselves from self-judgement. The 'YouTube algorithm' of serving up increasingly shock and outrage content, and the same habit in online discussions, is leading people to increasingly partisan and hostile viewpoints about... every aspect of life.

Except many do, even when they don't agree with them. I really don't know where you're going with this. How the stereotypes come into existence is one thing, but once they do, people make jokes about them whether they agree with them or not.
This is no different. People are using these words because they're popular to use.

No... actually, they don't. People who make racist jokes, are revealing a nasty truth about themselves.Except many do, even when they don't agree with them. They cry joke to self-deny, but they still perpetuate the harm and the beliefs underlying that so-called humor.
Things such as statements of character proposed as humor are just not funny to people unless they believe in them to some degree.

This is why I don't talk much in game. I can only feel like I would be reported left and right for one reason or another.

I mean if you got upset over that meme posted in the guild chat, then you're someone I would need to tip toe around. I'm by no means rude or intentionally mean towards any group of people, but coming from a different gaming background, I'm not quite as delicate as it seems a majority of FFXIV players are. I'd rather just mind my own business and play the game in silence as opposed to wondering who the next person to get teary eyed will be.Eh, I am by no meaning saying you are a 'moron', refrain from 'moronic' comments then potentially you won't get reported. I enjoy talking, think about what I say most of the time, the times I do not usually comes down to playing the game while drinking a number of pints while playing and having comments when I next log in like "you ok today Soul" quite funny a lot of the time I don't remember if I maybe had said something 'moronic' or not lol.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

The only reason you would be worried about getting reported is if you say things that shouldn't be said in the first place. The fact that you know you say things that shouldn't be said and would be derogatory to someone yet still feel the need to say them is shocking.
Props to knowing this and controlling what you say around others I guess. At least you have this much self control.
