I would assume the "King" in Machinists kit is the Machinist itself. It's the "leader" piece, after all, and you lose if it's taken, much like you lose if you're KO'd.

Must say, I actually really enjoy this nomenclature. Works even better when you consider that the "Queen" seems to be doing both direct damage and AoE damage; Much like how the Queen in Chess combines the Rook and Bishop move sets.
