The only tomestone being removed is Creation. Mendacity and Genesis will be unobtainable, which would be just kinda the same but they are still there. Also with Poetics you'll be able to buy and improve high lvl 70 gear now.

It probably costs money and resources to create and swap out various tomestones each expansion. Seems like a bit of a waste to me, though I guess the alternative would be reworking all of them and removing a couple anyway...so this would probably be the cheaper option.
If it’s like the past expansions there will also be a new crafted 385 set with NQ versions sold from vendors as well as other NQ gear from 72-78 with HQ versions obtained from MSQ
For me I think an exception for this is I would recommend going to the expansion with all tomes capped for new stuff as well as being able to exchange the older tomes at the typical 4-1 ratio.I agree with this 100%. Never let your currency cap. There is always something you can buy. Right now you can buy poetics gear for your DNC and GBR. You can also always buy items for an anima weapon or gardening soil. You may not garden but I guarantee you many people do. So yea bottom line is use em.
It doesn't leave a huge gap in duty currencies, because it'll be exactly like the HW > SB transition. Everything purchased with Mendacity or Genesis tomestones will be purchasable with Poetics instead. Along with this, every content that currently rewards either of those two tomestones will reward Poetics instead.I don't see this discussed elsewhere: the most recent "upcoming changes" notice says that 5.0 will see the removal of both Mendacity and Genesis tomestones -- but the two new types of tomestones will only be available at level 80.
Doesn't that leave a huge gap in using duty currencies to upgrade gear from 70-79th level? Or are they going to be putting iLevel 390 items on a gil merchant?
I still have a couple jobs I want to level up and gear to 360/390. Just a casual player here (don't do much raiding other than occasional pugs).
60-69 didn't have any dedicated tomestones either, so it's normal for the new tomestones to not be available until hitting the level cap.
It's likely because the Currency tab only has "space" for a total of four tomestone types. They're using Poetics for everything prior to the current expansion. Followed by one tomestone type that's no longer obtainable (Creation), an uncapped tomestone type (Mendacity), and a tomestone type with a weekly cap (Genesis).
With 5.0, Creation will be removed completely, Mendacity/Genesis will no longer be obtainable, with the uncapped lvl 80 tomestone taking the fourth spot. Once they release the new weekly capped tomestone (along with the new 8-man raid), some time after the release of 5.0, they'll likely remove Mendacity completely.

All the current level 70 tomestone gear will become buyable with Poetics - just like all the level 50 and 60 tomestonegear already is.I don't see this discussed elsewhere: the most recent "upcoming changes" notice says that 5.0 will see the removal of both Mendacity and Genesis tomestones -- but the two new types of tomestones will only be available at level 80.

Level 71-79 gear won't be purchasable with tomestones - just as level 41-49, 51-59, 61-69 gear isn't.
This was very much expected, since it is pretty much exactly the same as what happened to tomestones at the launch of Stormblood
They will all be purchasable as they are currently, except with Allagan Tomestones of Poetics instead. The exception is Lost Allagan gear, which will be removed and exclusively obtained from hunt NPCs.
Going off history, which they have consistently reproduced at every single prior expansion:
After 5.0, you should be able to purchase i385 gear with gil from a merchant at Kugane. You will be able to obtain gear for L71 onwards from quests, merchants and dungeons.
70-73 i400 (Augmented Scaevan, Omega, L73 Dungeon Loot)
74 i403 (Crafted, HQ Quest Reward, NQ Merchants)
75 i406 (L75 Dungeon Loot)
76 i409 (Crafted, HQ Quest Reward, NQ Merchants)
77 i412 (L77 Dungeon Loot)
78 i415 (Crafted, HQ Quest Reward, NQ Merchants)
79 i418 (L79 Dungeon Loot)
80 i420 (Job Gear)
80 i430 (L80 Dungeon Loot)
5.0 will see the addition of a new tomestone replacing creation, with no weekly cap, for purchasing i440 gear. Extreme trials may yield us i450 weapons and accessories. 2 weeks after 5.0, we will be able to craft and obtain i450 gear from the new story raids. 4 weeks after 5.0, a new tomestone replacing mendacity will allow us to get i460 gear and savage raids will allow us to get i470 gear.
Though I didn't glimpse the items themselves, Yoshi's DNC was i433. If you do the maths, i420 Job gear with i450 tomestone accessories and 1 i430 expert dungeon ring results in i433.
They frequently copy+paste tomestone-related things and forget to edit them. No joke!
Would be nice if they can double the cap for poetics too
