This is actually a quite interesting topic - I'm Japanese and am around 5'2, the actual average for Japanese women. Japanese men are, on average, 5'7 or so. I think that many Asians are smaller in stature and such, but myself and most of my friends actually admire taller people, like Americans and Europeans who can be so tall that they look like models. Taller people in Japan aren't thought to be unfeminine, but, at least in my experience, to be more 'model' like. When almost everyone around you is 4'10 - 5'6 or so as a woman, and the men not all that tall, seeing or having tall friends is actually a lil exotic. Maybe it is just a difference in culture if some people find taller women unfeminine?

"Vieras" were always tall, amazonian women. When expecting Vieras, I believe people knew they would be tall. And that's OK.
I personnaly think that if Vieras would've been smaller, people would find it strange, because they were never small in the first place.

Over the last few months, I've seen several people talking about short Viera and making references to Feol.

I believe whole idea of "short Viera" originates from that direction. Especially since good chunk of playerbase probably has never played any other Final Fantasy game, me for example.

Maybe, I actually thought about that, but I figured Vieras were based of Fran since she was in the game, sortof like how Yugiri was the original model for Au Ras.
Perhaps you are right ; if that's the case, then I understand why some are disappointed (and it is a more legitimate reason to be).

I've got no problem with them (I'm still gonna fantasia to my minimum height Viera). Glad people get more options for tall women. I just wish I could be a tad shorter as a bunny ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Heck, i wish Viera was taller. My character is 7'3 feet/2.2 meters, so they're head shorter. Their ears don't really compensate but i'll manage as 6'3 midget bunny.

Their current height range hits a good balance considering they're supposed to be a tall race.
