I really like that backstory lol! I'm still poking at Sonja's...I actually quite like the Viera lore, personally, though I picked a Vieran name for my character (well before the actual conventions were released, yay guessing!) and I'm definitely sticking with it. To my character's mind, she didn't leave the Viera, the Viera left her - they refused to understand that their entire culture's way of life was under threat by these metal men in their metal armor with weapons that could blast away their spears and rapiers without a single thought. When she left, she left with the full intent to return, whether the Viera of Arda wished her to or not. So she left as Sjel Arda, of the Viera who walk the highest peaks of Skatay, and so she shall remain.
She did, finally, after 60 years of exile, decide to dye her auspicious white hair blue, though. You can't live amongst these flamboyant Eorzeans for nearly five decades without picking up some of their flair for the dramatic. She still scoffs when she sees one of her sisters named Pancake Syrup, but she understands. Vieran culture does have a tendency to stifle the mind and spirit of those who do not follow it to the letter.
I'm dying over the idea of a Viera named Pancake Syrup.
She goes into the outside world, has her first taste of foreign cuisine, and has an absolute epiphany: pancake syrup is, in fact, the nectar of the gods, and she has been waiting her entire life to experience it.
...Would be a great concept for a culinarian character, actually.
I really thought The Lost were a different branch of the Hrothgar who doesn't worship their females as much and lived Nomadic lives where it would be normal to leave your family at some point, but SE threw that out of the Window, so my backstory (that I'l never RP but whatever...) is that the Queen (and therefore mother) of my character died when he was a toddler, so he is used to living without a Queen so much that he can't help but scoff at his father who droned on and on about the Golden Days with their Queen, and esspecially at Helions who always look at him pityingly.
The naming conventions for viera and hrothgar just aren't that good. So last night when I made a hrothgar, I gave him an original name. I'll say he was named by pirates or slavers who stole him as a child. Simple enough.
It kind of boggles the mind that the naming conventions would be so late, and so poorly done.
In fairness, when they did Au Ra, they only needed to come up with two sets of naming conventions.
When Viera and Hrothgar were added, they were ALSO naming all the races on the First Shard, whose conventions all differ from those of the Source. That's a LOT to do at once! It's unfortunate that the player naming conventions suffered for it, but I wouldn't call it surprising.
I finally got around to reading these. Geez, all that waiting to find that their hearts were hardly in it. I did think that Viera would probably have a little less effort than normal put into it because it largely happened from player feedback and Hrothgar was the race they actually wanted to make. That is slightly reflected in the posts, but it's all just...fairly pitiful. At least Hrothgar's post has something interesting. I know I shouldn't complain about getting at least something, so- alright, it's better than nothing. It's just that it further reinforces a low perception that they hardly even wanted to do new races. But oh well, they look good! I certainly like the new races.
Ah, that is a good point. There's probably more than enough regret to go around the team not being able to do everything they wanted. But no time for regrets now! At least I have a direction to go with now because I had already determined a pseudo-Icelandic name to go with a while ago.In fairness, when they did Au Ra, they only needed to come up with two sets of naming conventions.
