There are only two Azure dragoons. Oh wait. ¬_¬

I really liked how the developers had managed to make FFXIV's world make sense, even while including the players' characters in the storylines, until now. It was perfectly logical for everything everyone was doing in quests to happen, even if many people did it.

And now we have this job quest storyline, which throws all this away. Surrounded by a horde of Dragoons after the quest is very clear about how 'unique' your character is and all that... It's just depressing. I really hope the developers realise their mistake and change the quest to be something a bit less illogical when taking into account the other players on the server who will also be Dragoons.

Yeah, having a "You are the only one who can save the world!" kind of story doesn't really make sense in an MMO.

As amazing as the final scene was (epecially funny when in full BRD af!), I have to agree that the uniqueness doesn't fit in with other lore in game... but it really didn't bother me. It isn't like this is the first mmo to treat job quests in that manner.

True, but I actually thought FFXIV was BETTER because it was one of the few that didn't do it.

I enjoy the fact that this game treats you like you're a person and not some superhero, but I'm guessing that the majority probably doesn't agree

This bothers me a lot, enough to make me seriously consider quitting.

I know that must sound melodramatic, but what I care about most in these games is the believability of the setting. Now, not only are there quests that contradict the visible evidence - 'you're the only one that can do X-OH WAIT YOU'RE SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO OBVIOUSLY ALREADY DID' - but worse, as a roleplayer I have to deal with the fact that the quests have to have never happened. Normally that isn't a bother - we've all been doing so with the main scenario for a while - but the lore behind the Job equipment means that there has to be an alternate explanation if it's to be worn in-character. Fine by me since I probably won't do that, but things get messy when the people I play with start forcing me to choose between playing with them, accepting their reasoning, or having my character treat them as if they're nuts.

Worst of all however is the precedent this decision to abandon believability apparently sets. Will all primary story content, henceforth, be telling me how unique and special my character is whilst surrounding me on screen at the same time, with a cluster of people bearing visible evidence that they already did, achieved, and acquired these supposedly unique and special things, thus highlighting the lie? Is there never again going to be anything that will help me believe my character is a part of the world, and that the game world, the people in it, and other people's characters, are not irrelevant beside my own?

Not only is that depressing in and of itself, it also hammers home the fact that nothing unique or special like that will ever exist - a common issue in MMORPG's, sure, but one that the writers' job is to avert our attention from, not direct it toward.

It is just something that happens in MMO's along with how you kill the same NM's over and over and static NPC's say the same thing over and over. Just do as I do and suspend belief and try to not worry about it.

Normally, I'd agree, however the much-emphasised uniqueness of the job gear means there's persistent 'evidence of the lie'. Out of sight, out of mind, doesn't work here as it does with most of the content labours under false uniqueness issue (which, surprisingly, they've actually done a decent job of writing around so far); largely because it's so rarely out of sight.
