Take a look at the SE shop and see how they describe each expansion.

Advertised just like any other MMO - highlighting all the various types of content it has to offer (with story being just a part).
If someone can give me a quote from the Almighty Yoshi confirming that Story should be everyone's main focus and enjoyment, I will concede this point.
With Final Fantasy XIV, we deliberately targeted those who have yet to play an MMORPG, and made certain that the first part of the game wouldn’t require players to recruit a party of other players. Also, the speed at which players need to react is intentionally slower at the start of the game. For hardcore MMORPG players, this may seem boring (and admittedly this is an actual piece of feedback we receive), but if we don’t attract new MMORPG players, then we can’t expect this genre to expand. Based on this concept, we took a story-driven approach, where the battle content becomes progressively harder while the story motivates the player to continue. At the same time, we introduced non-combat-focused elements such as player housing, the Gold Saucer and its attractions, and the Triple Triad mini-game for players to enjoy. We also added other content that mitigates the more casual player’s fear of not being able to catch up to high-level players, such as easing the difficulty of obtaining gear over time. For high-end content, the stages are very difficult at first, but through subsequent updates, their difficulty level is toned down so that casual players will be able to clear the older content. These little touches can be seen all throughout Final Fantasy XIV.
Sounds like the story is important..
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
I'm a fairly new player to FF14. Started around 3/4 weeks ago and just now entering Heavensward content. Out of the MMOs I've played (WoW, GW2, and ESO), I'd say FF14 is the most engrossing but I do recognize that there's ways to improve/execute better, especially in regards to trimming down fetch quest content; post-ARR was somewhat of a slog to get through. But it might just be current WoW with the dumpsterfire of BfA; but having an MMO this story-focused/cinematic-like is a breath of fresh air.

I notice how everyone keeps going on and on about the story and cutscenes, but conveniently forget how god-awful the endless teleport-fedexing is. Maybe that gets suppressed in memory.

this is because the primary complaint of the OP is
Not about "fedexing".go to npc -----> cutscene -----> accept quest -----> cutscene -----> make quest -----> go to npc -----> cutscene ------> accept new quest -----> cutscene -----> go to next npc -----> cutscene
-----> do quest -----> cutscene -----> go to npc -----> cutscene -----> accept dungeon-quest -----> cutscene -----> enter dungeon -----> cutscene -----> arrive first boss -------> cutscene
-----> arive next boss -----> cutscene -----> arrive last boss -----> cutscene -----> defeat last bos -----> cutscene ------> go out of dungeon ------> cutscene-...................

Exactly so. I suppress it like PTSD. Until someone asks me to go grab dinner and bring it back, Then I cower under the kitchen table whimpering " no fetch no fetch"
I get where the OP and others are coming from. I brought two friends with me one has learned to skip and click the other went back to playing WoW =/
It's not the questing or even the fetch quests (which I despise right up there with collection quests) but the cut scenes that they did not care for. Oh and the reading. (And the instanced solo battles but that is another topic!). So not to be part of the dog pile but I doubt that is going to change anytime soon. If you enjoy the game then you need to skip and click. If you can't do that sadly you may need to find something you do enjoy.
But hey IF they did change it That would be cool by me too so long as there was still a story and the game did no devolve back into Everquest or XI like game play.

I thought FFXIV's endgame is reachable at level 1. Just make a character in Uldah and go to quicksands bam done xD.
i never try it in FF14 but can you actually give money to other player? not via market but like right click trade like in old mmo? it never occur to me in this game. Can i have your stuff?
to be honest i played wow until cataclysm and i still dont know the story of how and why about it at all. the only thing i know about wow as far as story goes is basically...wow isnt mindless it has a story as well. its simply told more through quests, npc dialogue, and text rather than shoving thousands of unnecessary cutscenes down your throat.
- faction A and B always fight each other
- new enemy C appear
- faction A and B work together
- C defeated
- short break and faction A and B is at war again, while the defeated C become either on faction A or B side
- repeat
- for further in depth please buy our novel and comic
thats pretty much how i see the general story of wow ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
