I've been levelling up an alt character with my GF who just started the game. She's watching every single cutscene and I can say that I completely agree with OP. We reached 70 recently and we still need to go through the 4.4 and 4.5 stories now. I can safely say that at least 70% of our levelling time was just spent watching cutscenes. Sometimes you just got out of a cutscene, then you go from one NPC to another, it takes at most 30sec and then you get another 15min of cutscene, sometimes more. It's non-stop. Yes you can skip them, but for people who want to know what's happening with all these characters it's not an option. And forcing people to spend so much time watching cutscenes isn't the only way to build an interesting story in a video game. There is a LOT of useless padding in there. I strongly think that the whole main storyline of the game should be completely revamped pacing-wise or just become optional, especially the big "max level" portions (which are at level 50, 60 and 70). At this point I'm wondering if it hasn't been done on purpose just to sell more jump-potions.
I didn't think it was that bad before because I started playing back in 2.0. I did everything patches after patches so it wasn't such a chore for me. Making this alt character made me realize how much of a pain it must be for new players right now and it's only going to be worse with each expansion if they don't do something about it.
Or perhaps this could be viewed as useful and important criticism to improve the experience for new players to get them as addicted as we all are. This is a theme park mmo, it's meant to have different things for everyone, but you have to be able to get that point. MSQ gates that from players. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, but there's room for improvement so more people can enjoy the parts of the game that they like.
I really don't get why so many people are upset and think they need to leave snide remarks about someone's impression of the game. Yoshi has wanted feedback from players since he came onboard, specifically because people leaving without feedback won't let them improve.
I suppose that's what you feel when you come into FF14 after others MMOs that aren't strictly focused on story telling and cutscenes. It was okay for us when we did it because it was relevant content and we ate it part by part, but when you come into game when it's 5 y.o. you need to munch the whole set of dishes at once. Can be really frustrating but, I fear, almost inevitable and works like this not only for this game. They work on changing ARR quests right now, probably will work on HW and SB as well later.
Right? No, I've not played World of Warcraft and FFXIV is my first and only MMO that I have been playing for a long time. But the amount of mindless people in this game is astonishing. Let's not sugar coat it, there is a huge problem with the mindset in the community, especially in NA and EU and it should not proud itself in being a non-mindless community. It absolutely is.
You aren't the only one, while I love the MSQ on patch day I do wish each one took longer than a couple hours to complete.
I'm not being snide, I really think people should try other games instead of insisting the dev team change the structure of this game because some people can't get into it. There's a difference between improving the game and totally changing how it does story progression, you would upset a lot of people myself included if you change how this game does story progression.

Because ARR after-50 story was very long with its 100 quests to catch up if you do it on alt or as new player. That's why they made HW after-60 44 and SB after-70 40 quests. And I bet that if ShB 80-after will be like 70 quests (middle between ARR and HW), in 6.0 there will be people who will scream that it's too long to do.
That is true yes, and thus a compromise has already been made, I can see trimming down some of post ARR before HW but that's about it, no need to cave to these demands(by a very vocal minority) like making the MSQ optional and what not.you know the fun (and sad at the same time) thing?
