How far do I have to upgrade a relic weapon before I can safely store it into the Armoire and be done with it?
Short answer: Relic weapons cannot go in the Armoire at any stage. They also aren't allowed in the Glamour Dresser, but replicas are.
Long answer:
If you reeeeeeeeeeeally want to throw away your old relics, I believe the following things are true (though you may want to double-check for other sources before doing any of them, since I haven't personally tried throwing away any of my various relics yet)...
ARR Relics (Zodiac weapons):
- Once you've taken a weapon to the fully-completed "Zeta" stage and completed "The Vital Title" quest (note: you only have to do this quest once, ever), you can purchase replicas of any stage of that relic from an NPC in North Shroud, but only if the relic is in your inventory / armory chest. I think you can remove the inventory / armory chest requirement if you pick up the first HW relic quest "Soul Without Life" and trade the lady your completed Zeta weapon, though I've not personally done it myself. If you give that lady your relic, but then don't actually care about starting an HW relic, can you just cancel the quest and still be able to purchase the ARR replicas? Does the quest even need to be active to trade her your relic? I do not know.
- Replica vendor: Drake (North Shroud; 30, 20)
HW Relics (Anima weapons):
- Once you've taken a weapon to the fully-completed "Lux" stage, an NPC in Azys Lla will sell you replicas of any stage of that relic regardless of whether or not you've thrown away the old relic.
- Does the NPC sell you replicas if you've only partially upgraded a relic? I'm not sure. Easy enough to test for yourself.
- Replica vendor: Restoration Node (Azys Lla; 7, 11)
SB Relics (Eureka weapons):
- Once you've taken a weapon to the final "Eureka" (or "Physeos") stage, an NPC in Kugane will sell you replicas of most of the previous stages of that relic regardless of whether or not you've thrown away the old relic. Most of us suspect that they'll add the missing replicas (the non-glowing version of the final stage of the weapon) when the ShB expansion hits.
- If you only partially upgraded an SB relic, you can still purchase the replicas of any relic stage you've completed thus far.
- You may want to hang onto any completed SB relics, just in case they let you skip the first step of the ShB relic, like HW did.
- Replica vendor: Staelhundr (Kugane; 8, 14)
Side Note:
The base versions of the ARR and SB relics can be re-purchased from the Calamity Salvager if you've thrown them away, but later decide to upgrade the relic. If you had previously obtained them, the Calamity Salvager will sell you the i80 version of the ARR relic (the stage between "Unfinished" and "Zenith"), and they can also sell you the i290 SB base relic weapon (originally awarded for completing a job's Lv70 quest). If you throw away an incomplete HW relic, but later want to upgrade it, you will have to start from scratch (the "Soul Without Life" quest).

Right, so get one weapon to Zeta. Copy all the others and put them in as glams, turn in the partial weapons in order to make the Anima better.
Repeat with one "lux", But these can't be turned in anywhere, so are completely spare once glam made?
I doubt that I'll be able to get anything good out of Eureka, it'll be dead content before I get that far...
My own personal cost bennifit analysis says that for the time it takes, the form made by using the thanvanian mist looks best. It's just not worth it to me to push them all through the books just to make them more pleasingly decorative. Maybe the anima gem fates... maybe not.
That's not quite how the Zeta replicas work.
Normally you need to have the Zeta in your possession in order to trigger Drake to show its replica series. If you convert it to Umbral/Astral Nodules via Syndony (Soul Without Life quest not required apart from unlocking her options), that unlocks the ability to purchase that Zeta's replicas from Drake without needing to own it. Either way, it only unlocks replicas of that particular Zeta, not all of them. You still need to create all of them in order to unlock all the weapons' replicas.
As for Anima, each respective replica is unlocked upon completing each step's progress. Completing the Lux completes each replica set as a matter of course.
Eurekan weapons only have replicas for the form it takes upon completing each zone ( -Anemos, -Pagos etc.) Unfortunately there are no replicas of the steps inbetween.

You can repurchase the original form weapon from the Calamity Salvager (under Lv50 Weapons & Tools), even if you still have your semi-upgraded one. It's the real thing, not a replica, so you can probably just re-upgrade it with Mist again.
I also just learned this, mid-book-stage of working on my relic. (I haven't completed any other relics, and my anima weapon is stalled at the "collect crystals or hand in your relic" stage.)
So, I need to get the ARR relics far enough that they will be accepted by the LUX relix person to give me a kickstart on it, and then drake will think that I'd progressed the ARR relic far enough that it qualifies for the replica, even though I didn't, and I don't have it on me?
So how far do I need to get the ARR relic, before it can be turned in to the HR relic person?
Two things I need to make very clear:
1) Each expansion's relic is unrelated to every other relic. You can make a HW relic without making an ARR relic. You can make a SB relic without making a HW relic. These things take an inordinate amount of time to make, and thus, I would really only suggest making the relic weapons whose appearance you really like.
2) Each relic weapon is unrelated to each other relic weapon. If you finish making an ARR lance, you will be able to purchase the replicas for all the various appearances that ARR lance has gone through thus far, but you won't suddenly be able to buy replicas for fists and bows and swords. You'd have to finish each weapon, if you wanted the replicas for every weapon.
It needs to be complete (it will have "Zeta" in the name).
I would like to answer your other question in your post, but I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're asking. I will attempt to answer it anyway:
If you complete "The Vital Title" quest (which becomes available after you've completed one ARR relic), and then you turn in a completed ARR relic ("Zeta" weapon) to Syndony (Mor Dhona; 23, 6; upstairs), then you will be able to purchase all of the ARR replicas for that specific weapon from Drake.
For example:
If I complete the ARR BLM weapon (Lilith Rod Zeta) and turn it in to Syndony (Mor Dhona; 23, 6; upstairs), then I will be able to purchase the following items from Drake:
- Unfinished Stardust Rod Replica
- Stardust Rod Replica
- Stardust Rod Zenith Replica
- Stardust Rod Atma Replica
- Stardust Rod Animus Replica
- Stardust Rod Novus Replica
- Stardust Rod Nexus Replica
- Lilith Rod Replica
- Lilith Rod Zeta Replica
If you wanted to be able to purchase every ARR replica of every weapon type, then you would need to fully complete all 10 ARR relics for each job available (PLD, WAR, WHM, SCH, BRD, MNK, DRG, NIN, BLM, SMN), and complete "The Vital Title" quest once.
If you wanted to be able to purchase every HW replica of every weapon type, then you would need to fully complete all 13 HW relics for each job available (PLD, WAR, WHM, SCH, BRD, MNK, DRG, NIN, BLM, SMN, AST, DRK, MCH).
If you wanted to be able to purchase every SB replica of every weapon type, then you would need to fully complete all 15 SB relics for each job available (PLD, WAR, WHM, SCH, BRD, MNK, DRG, NIN, BLM, SMN, AST, DRK, MCH, RDM, SAM).
I have personally fully-completed the following relics...
ARR: WAR BRD NIN BLM
HW: WAR BRD BLM MCH DRK PLD
SB: WAR BRD BLM MCH
...so I am able to purchase the following replicas:
ARR: Axe, Bow, Knives, Rod
HW: Axe, Bow, Rod, Gun, Greatsword, Sword/Shield
SB: Axe, Bow, Rod, Gun

drat, the way you where saying it, it sounded like there was a shortcut, that I wouldn't have to do the torture that is some of the most insane stuff in order to put away the weapons.
Okay, so that's why you where talking about throwing away things.
If I throw away my thavanarian mist level ARR relics, and then try to take them back from the scavenger, what condition do I get them back? The broken box of parts? Already merged with the doner? Having to fetch the ampador tablet? Fighting the monsters with the unfinished? Reforged with the hard mode primal drops?
Ah, here it is.
Zenith is the mist stage.
So if I drop these, I can rebuy it from the scavanger, rebuy the mist, bake it in the oven, and get the zenith i90 back.
Then I'm very glad I didn't push any of the others past the mist level, I've wasted some poetics, but they are plentiful enough to not matter.
I really want to be able to use the relics as glams, but the insane amount of work is almost painful to contemplate.
(I just noticed, the one that gets restored to you by the scavenger, is the one that triggers the achivement)
