Usually they will be AFK and they will stay much longer after the property has been sold. Their character will click on placard attempt to buy and then look away.

There is a script that's an open secret people can download and run that automates the clicking process.

I had a friend use it to get his house because a lalafel we were both competing with earlier admitted to using it for over 20 hours.
I will not name and shame them, but they shared me the code and said how stupidly easy it was.
TBH if you know BASIC, you can reprogram the code so that not even FF could tell you were using it to buy the house.

That's how messed up this system is.
