Crash when selecting character (16a)

Hi,

Returning player here. Saw the 7 day free login campaign for returning player, and decided to check the game out again since I've not played in a couple of years now. Unfortunately when I select my main character, the game instantly crashes, with a message popping up that says: "an unexpected error has occured. Exiting final fantasy XIV. (16a)" I assume 16a is the error code and tried to google it if others found any fixes etc. Unfortunately what I found myself didn't help me.

I tried reinstalling the game multiple times, emptying the folder in My Games/FFXIV and checking my drivers. Nothing worked. Odd thing is however, is that I'm only unable to log in on my main character. Other characters still work just fine, but only the character I actually want to play on causes a crash, so not sure how that even happens.

Anyway I hope I provided enough information and that anyone can help me out. Looked forward to play again but a shame I'm dealing with this issues.

Hey, this error occurs in the character select screen. When I press on my character I want to play with, the "login with [character name]?" prompt pops up and when I click OK it immediately crashes and get the error message. The error only happens when I try to login on my main character, if I make a new character it works just fine. The character is currently located in the South shroud according to the character selection creen.

If it is only happening with this one character, you may want to try deleting the locally-saved data folder (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV). Make sure to create a backup of this so you can replace it if it doesn't solve the issue.

Also, try running the game without any overlays.
