This. Being able to call it up quickly with text commands would cause it to be used more.
It's not that people don't know how to use it, it's that it's not as... snappy as it should be.I think it's pretty obvious that outside of a few tweaks that can be done like allowing players to use auto-translate in the search comment....the search feature is fleshed out pretty well, and now in this thread. It was also explained in the patch it was released with, as well as explained on the lodestone.
How many times did you call up the search function from the menu in FFXI, versus doing /sea all MNK. The beauty of the FFXI search function was how you could easily search for anything with a text command:
/sea all GAL PUP 99 Tah (Player names beginning with 'tah')
/sea region TAR BLM 75-99 Bastok
/sea Jugner HUM 60 ballista

I don't disagree with text commands being faster. They don't exist in this game for that function though. Just because it's something people would like doesn't mean they should ignore a current function that is more than adequate for their purposes.This. People honestly don't know how to use it by the way. Look back a few pages, a player didn't even know he could add a search comment to his seeking party status. There's really no excuse when you have proper documentation telling you how to use the feature. That's the real problem here...not the simplicity of the system. The search feature is simple enough as it is. Could it be more simple? Sure, but players not even educating themselves on the systems of a game is more to blame if you ask me.
Why would you want to run through a game not knowing how to play it fully? that doesn't make any sense to me.

Well I hope text commands do change things. They probably won't but I see people taking the past of least resistance. It takes 10~30 seconds to put up flag with all of the clicks/keypresses, vs. the 5~15 seconds it should take to type a message, and the second here and there it takes to send it again to Ul'dah. Also the X seconds it takes to view Ul'dah shouts, vs. the 15+X seconds it takes to open up the search function (X being however long it takes you to read), choose "Seeking Party," (not accidentally hit "Reset"--Grrrr!--) fix the level range, begin the search, and wait for results.
On the contrary, a text command should be as fast as typing a /shout and will be faster than scrolling up through /shout, so maybe people will start to switch.. but I still doubt it. :/
I think it's just hard to teach an old dog new tricks. And frankly, when someone asked, "How do I put up party flag" in XI, I said "/inv."Sure, but players not even educating themselves on the systems of a game is more to blame if you ask me.
In XIV, I have to respond, "Go to the search option on the main menu, click your name, then click online status and change it to seeking party. Then choose your classes from the list and close." Is it hideously complex? No.
But which is clearer?
"/inv"
or
"Go to the search option on the main menu, click your name, then click online status and change it to seeking party. Then choose your classes from the list and close."

But you can do sea all with the search function.....This. Being able to call it up quickly with text commands would cause it to be used more.
