Although, for me personally, I rarely do NMs beyond the first couple of weeks so I can't say their strategy is actually effective. But I also can't say for sure if the system was different that my opinion of running NMs would change.
But you would still gear at exactly the same pace because you need the same number of tokens overall. The only difference would be that you would actually get to have more choice per week, so instead of waiting a mandatory 4 weeks for a chest piece, you could get it in 1 at the cost of losing out on multiple upgrades, e.g. accessories.

I assume they remain as items so they can be rolled on as loot.

It would be nice if they could be converted to currency afterwards (could say you hand them in to Rowena for credit), though I'm guessing they would need to rearrange how the items are arranged in the shop - grouped by currency instead of DoW/DoM.

Yes the primal tokens need to be added to currencies as they take up alot of inventory space.

I think some of it is a restriction with how the game handles buying items with currency, versus trading them for tokens.

Shop tabs where you buy items only take one currency at a time, but a trading tab (like the Wondrous Sundries where you trade in your set of raid tokens) can take a broad mix of items.

So firstly it would cause an issue because you can't trade three different currency coins into the one purchase any more.

Also, unless they greatly simplified the number of currencies, every one might need its own tab in the shop. There'd be a page for Gordian headgear (lens currency), then body gear (shaft currency), and so on. More categories needed per raid, and maybe separate tabs for every item-converted-to-currency in the Sundries trade section.

So, assuming I've guessed it right at least, it's probably not as simple as it seems like it should be.

Savage books should definitely have their own currency sections, though they'd probably need to be divided out by expansion.

I like this idea, hope it happens for any raid item not obtained via treasure chest.

Or you know, they could start by letting us use that "key items" tab more liberally. A whole page of potential inventory space taken up by 2 or 3 items is reeeeeeeal efficient.

You mean you never needed all 105 slots before? HA yeah I don't think I've seen over 10 slots used. This would be the better place to put these items.. If not that then convert 70 slots to normal inventory space. 35 is still more than enough for "key" items.
