    If absolutely nothing else, Varis is undoubtedly extremely patriotic and devoted to doing the best for his people. I seriously doubt he'd willingly sacrifice his soldiers, his people, gambling on the possibility that we'd come out on top and get rid of Solus for him in the process.

    Varis may be a genocidal madman (probably), but deliberately killing his own men is something only monsters like his son would do. If he wants to hold that little bit of moral high ground he has over Zenos...

    Well he is sacreficing his people either way. The rejoining is not something we can survive as far as we know.

    Actually, people have always survived the rejoinings (i.e. The Calamities), since society always amanges to rebuild itself. I think you meant "the return of Zodiark" in particular which would be more of a 'Resurrection' or 'Reunion'.
