Once you buy it off PSN then link it your account its then linked to your Mog Station and etc. Don't need to do anything else it will automatically download everything once it's ready. PS you link the pre-order through PSN i.e. when starting up the game it will (or should) ask if you want to link the ShB PO to the account.

So is there no way to get the pre-order items before the ShB launch?

I found an old SB FAQ about this and it mentions only having this opportunity to link it come up after downloading the new xpac.

I found an old SB FAQ about this and it mentions only having this opportunity to link it come up after downloading the new xpac.

It should let you get those items right after you link it for example After I pre ordered the expansion through PSN it asked me if I want to link up my account with the pre order, when logging into the game, after I did so the items were delivered to me when they got released through the mail system. Only thing I downloaded I guess was just the data for the pre‐order but right now the only thing I have is just what is currently been released. So it really isn't anything extra to download you just have to link the pre order to your account.

So basically go into PSN go to the PS store purchase or pre order the expansion after that's done Log in to your final fantasy 14 account should ask you right after log in if you wanna link the shadowbringers pre order to your account. Just Yes to the questions and etc. after that's all done once you log into the game itself the PO items should be delivered to your character and you're good to go once they release expansion and it will automatically download the data when it's ready.
