I like both western and jrpgs, a good rpg is good pure and simple, and i have played wow, it was stupid easy getting to max level, they claim it helps people get to the "good" part, but i'm an old school mmo player, and the adventure getting there is just as important, if not more. I also remember high level players being looked at with awe and respect, instead of any little kid can do it,

I do like how the areas look, but I don't LOVE them. I keep trying to figure out why exactly.. But I think you may have said it right there. Perhaps lack in variation of colour. Thanalan is pretty much all orangey-yellow without many other colours scattered about. The Black shroud and La Noscea are all green with... not much else. Even some oddly coloured flowers or crystals or rocks may be able to spice it up a bit. That illustration of Gridania had much more plant life.. More to see, more life to the place. Even looks a little misty and mysterious, with glowing lights. I was expecting something a little more "WOW" than "meh.." Not to say the areas don't look nice. They do, but they're just ok.
In some other games I'm always looking around at my surroundings. Aion was one game that was always impressing me. I couldn't take my eyes off the colour of the sky. In XIV I often auto-run without looking at much of anything because it all looks the same and very dull. I feel bad for saying that... because I'm sure the people who made it put so much hard work into it. :\

About the armor and such, I always thought it's a little dull right now but I'm guessing we'll have level increases in the future, so why make wicked armor now, when we could have that to work towards at say.. level 100ish, with amazing-looking class specific stuff or something? ^-^ I'm alright with the dull stuff for now. Means more to look forward to. I trust Yoshida-san to get us some awesome stuff!

the sky in Aion was really a sky... but the other "zone". Aion was good though I was waitng for the dynamic weather and that cool desert zone with dynamic critters. But I do like the realism in ffxiv. To me that is a WoW factor. You seeing places you don't/ can see in real life. I kinda hope SEadds maybe some irish sceneary that country screams fantasy.

Its also the back drop of hbo new fantasy based drama. Game of thrones. (can't wait it looks good)

Graphical style is one of the only good things about FFXIV...

Besides one of the Miqo'te's hairstyles, everything is amazing. In fact, I think most of the armour and weaponry is more western in theme (or at the very least middle-eastern) than armor in even the most western MMOs.

Last time I checked WoW has an active 12 mil subscribers. FFXI or FFXIV wouldn't even come close to having 12 mil subscribers in hundred years. You can hate WoW all you want, but their westernization of the game is successful.

The real subscriber base is estimated at around 4-6 million. Still a decent number but well below the inflated number Blizzard wants us to believe.

PS: Latest WOW census showed 4.7million characters that actually logged in.

i like eastern style better then West. But most of the art for ffxiv does not really look like it in game. The names of the class seem to go more for western i do hope they add FF title jobs into ffxiv.

The landscapes tend to be very vibrant though they tend to stick to a small pallet of colors

weapons and armor: brightness of color seems to have been very intentionally tier Dependant, so maybe the most colorful outfits are yet to come?
