So as I am sure most of us are aware, there is a rule against using profanity.

But here is the kicker, there is an option in game to remove the chat filter, allowing you to see and use profanity....

Is it just me or does that feel like a generally obvious error.

I am sure hundreds upon thousands of players have received suspensions and restrictions because of this rule, and in my opinion, it isn't fair in the slightest.

Why would you make an option to remove the chat filter, if only to punish players who use profanity?

And I don't mean harassing, attacking, slur profanity. I mean general MMO banter.

If someone reports you for this, you receive an instant suspension.
The last bit is the main one that crossed my mind. Most I would think most people are okay with a curse here and there in general chit-chat. Unless said curses are used to harass. With the bad word filter off, the player can see both types of chat and more then likely if they see curses being used to attack or harass they will probably report and curses use in general chit-chat will be just that and not reported. Excessive use might be another thing too. Me personally if I see someone in a linkshell chatting where every other word they use is a curse word it can get borderline annoying and I wouldn't think twice about blacklisting them. That's just me though, maybe another would be annoyed far more then me and decide it's enough to file a report.

    My two cents....

Don’t cuss outside of private channels with known friends and associates and you’ll be fine. Profanity and it’s level of social acceptance differs by culture. So what is your norm may not be the norm elsewhere. Whether you have read the terms of service or not you are bound by them.

Now anecdotally I have only ever heard of a few cases where people were banned for profanity. They were bypassing the filter, directed as Insults towards another player, and excessive use.
So only cuss in non public areas and if you do cuss in public channels make sure it is not directed at anyone, is not excessive, and you didn’t bypass the filter. And if people request you stop then you stop. Doing this would probably prevent a ban or suspension.

My understanding is that they dont move on profanity except in certain cases such as: Harassment (well duh), excessive use of profanity, and the use of very specific words (typically regardless of context. N-Word comes to mind).

Theyre not banning people for saying the d word, or c word, or f word here and there. Theyre doing it when you use it excessively, use it to harass others, or when you use those extremely naughty ones that people lose their shtick over. And the people Ive ever heard who complain they got banned for cursing almost always say that "I only did once! Honest!" Nah, most of the time theyre cursing worse than sailors in a storm, or theyre going after someone hard. GMs arent going to waste their time banning someone over the F word being said like "Man, that makes me f-ing happy. Thanks man!"

The filter, btw, is to filter out those occurances when someone does curse.

Granted, I actually agree with the premise of the rule change. If you shut off your chat filter, you are willingly exposing yourself to the profanity so the report should fall on deaf ears if youre reporting it for that reason.

My personal thoughts on this is people who can't handle the sight of words they find so offensive should either get a thicker skin or separate yourself from society.

Someone calls u a offensive name or uses language you don't approve of, how bout u just block that person, unless thier tracking u down following u yelling stuff at you then grow up and get over it, you're an adult now or at least old enough to know better.

So..This is really no different than actual laws. Can you swear in public? sure. But there comes a point where it becomes a Breach of peace or Disturbing the peace and it becomes a crime. Basically it depends on just how obnoxious you are about it.

I am part of a moderation team somewhere else, and the internals may not be the same but the deal ends up being: sure, players chose to turn off profanity filters, but that does not mean they want to see public profanity.

A lot of people do so for many reasons (silly words that get caught by profanity filters, or maybe they like tossing the occasional profane word in private conversations.)

Basically: you want to use foul language, try to hang out with folk that think the same way and keep that to party/fc chat. Most moderation teams will be VERY strict about language in public/default communication channels.

It's really not that hard to avoid using profanity. Just think before you type - where you are, what channel you're in etc. like in any real life conversation.

Also, 'I swore when I was a teenager' is not an excuse.

Within in reason I agree with you. However, it is also on the person exhibiting bad behavior. I’m sorry that person can control themselves too. This deal with it i’ll Do what I want grow a thicker skin attitude that some people like to have on the internet does not really fly. Try that on the job and see what happens.
