I was referring to this.
Another reason I don't like them just having this blanket prohibition against profanity is, well, there's profanity in the game. That variant of the S-word with an E on the end is used pretty frequently in the NPCs' dialogue, for example. A common slang term for a male body part that literally means more than one round object is also used pretty frequently, and in that very context of referring to genitalia.
I think if a word appears in the game, you should absolutely be allowed to use that word on the official forums and in the chat channels, as long as you're not using it maliciously. The S-word should be fine to use, as long as you're not calling some real person a piece of it or something like that.
Some such words will, of course, be harder to work into casual conversation in a benign manner. Whore, which I've seen used in the game's dialogue a couple of times, isn't quite a cussword, but it is generally really rude to use that word in most contexts.
I, personally, will never report someone for using any cussword in a non-malicious manner. The game is rated T for Teen, and kids of that age group say and/or hear worse stuff all the time, so it's not like the profanity ban is protecting them or anything. Source: I was that age once.
Now, if I see people doing ERP in a public chat channel, that is something I might report. Keep that to private channels! Not everyone wants to read that.

I Agree with OP!

Reasons to turn off the filter: You need to type things that contain swearwords but aren't swearwords themselves. You're talking to friends or otherwise limited groups with an accepted understanding that the language will be used and no reports will be made.
The reason they have the rule is so that people don't say later "Well... you never specifically SAID I couldn't say it.. "
Just like there's a speed limit on the road but your car is able to go well over it. There are situations in which breaking the rules is acceptable but the law needs to be there to enforce cases where it is not.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
The presence of a profanity filter is never a permission...
The presence of a profanity filter is a Fail-Safe.

The filter exists because common sense does not exist on the internet.

Why is there even one. I guess ones at SE have never stepped out there door. Because anywhere you go in real world there is tons of it everywhere. You just ignore it and go on. If see player using it to much a bothers me. I just blacklist them.

There are people who say some really disgusting things in /shout from political trolling to treating the chat like their personal discord. I will sometimes say something about it- asking them to stop. As expected, I get insults and rude /tells hurled my way. And I report. It seems to me like the easiest way to avoid any issue with the profanity rule is to simply not use bad words in circumstances where they could be seen as inflammatory.
I don't think anybody's ever been punished for saying vulgar things in their FC chat or otherwise amongst friends, but if someone is cursing like a sailor in a public chat, in front of strangers, that is not appropriate social behaviour and anyone who wishes to report it is fully justified in doing so.
Lawful good life.
Yes, there is of course the blacklist option. That is always an option. But 1. It is not an unlimited list. 2. If I end up in a duty with them (has happened) and they are giving instructions, well I'll be the odd one out.
