Me no, but there are some that do so yes. Because it's not only a MMO but also a FF and that is what makes it different from the other MMOs.
While it is not only about story it still is a story based MMO. There will even be a new game +
If the story wasn't important we wouldn't get that.

You should tell him that it doesn't matter if he's caught up, being caught up just means he's going to run out of things to do faster. A big appeal of this game is the story so you should be supporting him to take his time and enjoy it as he goes and run the dungeons/trials involved in that with him in the mean time. That's what I do with my friends and they love it.
Unless he's the type of player who only cares about raiding, in which case this may just not be the game for him to begin with but if he's determined anyway the skip potion option is there.
This game isn't really new player unfriendly at all, it's just people approach it with the wrong mindset thanks to games like WoW where endgame is all that matters.

The story can be important without requiring new players to go through a 150+ hour slog. Nobody has to play 1.0 to understand ARR, so there's no reason people need to clear this higher and higher barrier for entry. Heck, you can enjoy Heavensward if you just watch the trailer and skip all of ARR. Same with Stormblood.Me no, but there are some that do so yes. Because it's not only a MMO but also a FF and that is what makes it different from the other MMOs.

You, and a new player, don't need to know every minute of the story to get a rough understanding of the game to enjoy it. Additional information provides additional context -- just as playing 1.0 provided additional context to 2.0 -- but it's genuinely stupid to expect everyone to literally study the plot for essentially three expansions before even touching Shadowbringers.
Simple question for all the supposed 'story fanatics' how many hours do you have in the game, total (character OR across accounts)? How much of that time was spent doing the MAIN story (NOT side content), and how much was spent doing the mmo side of content, NOT (again) main story, i.e. dungeons, raids, trials, collecting (mount, minion, glamour), gearing, leveling (w/o sitting through the story), hunts, dailies (reputation), PvP, PoTD, HoH, Gold Saucer, housing, crafting, social (free company), grand company, FATEs, BLU ?
Now for pages, upon pages people have continued to miss the entire point. I have stated numerous, and so have others, that we don't want to take away the story. The story is adding up, it may only look like 2 expansions now, but down the line there will be more. I have never, and nor have the other posters, denied that the story wasn't a mainstay of the franchise, and the game itself. We have been advocating away to play current content (current means current as in latest raids, trials, etc., gearing up) while still being allowed to go back and do the story at your own pace. New game+ is a bandaid NOT a fix, and as the game continues to age, so will this problem. It needs to be streamlined, and the few that are selfish "I had to do it, new players should have to too" will only see numbers stagnate when they could be booming. It should be a choice to skip, and do later, however.
Yes, again, the price for a story skip is intimidating, and frustrating for many new players who just spent around (full price numbers as baseline) 50-60 dollars on the game, then another 25 for a story skip, and more if they want to level boost. Not to mention the fact that the story skip was literally skip your precious 'story'.
Literally continue to miss the point. At this point I pretty much give up, to be completely honest, there is no reasoning with these people.

Bought a Game but uhhh i have to "play" it pfff forums here I come.
"play" is the proper way of writing "grind through 150+ hours of crappy fedexing to catch up to my friend, with an occasional brainless overnerfed dungeon/trial on the way"
That is the new player experience. That needs to be improved.
