You're not the only one. I had fun from level 1 to endgame.

OK, so there are valid reasons to skip ARR and not. I have played ARR 37 times ok that's right 37 times...I have Absolutely enjoyed all content. I have mastered ARR to the point I can clear it in about two weeks. I have used the skip potion twice now because I just love the HW story and content. To each there own.
As far as catching up, there is way to much pressure put on noobies to make them fell like they have to be level70 to enjoy the game. Not True. Plenty of people just do crafting and are still in ARR for the last 6-8months. Also, not everyone can get the same play time per day or week because of life stuff.
I get the op "friend" wants to feel currently relevant when ShB comes out. FF games have always been about story first and then game play second. With FFxiv you get the best of both worlds if you want or you can just grind away.
IMO I f you are playing for the very first time don't skip even if it takes a month or two to get to SB. BTW with road to 60 boost on preferred worlds, accessories that increase exp, and duty finder scaling you can level stupid fast in this game in comparison to other MMO's.
One last thing if you feel that content is a waste of time don't do it there is so, so, much to do in this game its ridiculous. If there isn't anything you like play something else.

I think it depends entirely on whether you want to play 'Final Fantasy XIV' or whether you want to play 'Shadowbringers'.
Think of it like going to see the Avengers movies. Sure, it makes no sense to watch Endgame without seeing the other movies. But if you were forced to watch every other movie before you could see Infinity War and Endgame, would you even bother?

Well, can't say much about that - I did purchase Avengers DVD-pack (3 movies) and watched it before Endgame.I think it depends entirely on whether you want to play 'Final Fantasy XIV' or whether you want to play 'Shadowbringers'.

If cut scenes and sidequests are being skipped and you are playing on a tank, ARR takes a long time (I didn't measure but felt like around 2 weeks breaking to stop burnouts) while you can do HW and SB each in a day or less. Since your friend is a returner from ARR content they should already be through the bulk of the ARR content.
Completing Stormblood with the cut scenes and sidequests, soaking everything up for the first time and getting into decent gear took me 2-4 weeks. Since there are two months left, they have one month for each of the two expansions HW and SB. They can speed it up further by skipping sidequests and being a tank so that the queues are fast.
They can still reach it even if it's not by release day. Is reaching it by release day really that vitally important? There is a month's delay before savage raids get released so if this is the motivating factor then there's not a huge rush because that's three months.
The expansion is releasing a new feature called New Game+, which will allow you to go back and replay any quests you wish. You can buy a skip and then go back and do the quests you really want to do. The quests you're redoing are presumbly in a separate data table to your real quest progression.

Don´t make him feel he has to hurry and don´t tell him that all old content isn´t relevant.
Tell your friend, that in FF14 the Story is relevant content and to take his time and enjoy it.
Run the old dungeons and alliance raids with him if he needs a break from questing.
Problem solved.
Edit: didn´t read, that its about yourself, so let me tell you: The story is good, take your time, older content is not irrelevant.

Wow so the main post was click bait the entire time. Shame on you OP.

I'm sorry guys, don't pile on! You caught me, and it is exactly as I feared. A new player, like me, voice would not be heard. I just wanted to get my say in, my feelings on my rush to get through all of the content, because I want to be caught up in time for the early access of Shadowbringers. I just came from WoW, and just wanted to try something new.

Continue posting lies and soon no one will trust any post you make. You will simply be treated as troll who cant be trusted to post seriously which is far more frustrating then anything the game throws at you. If you have a concern then talk and you will get answers to those concerns lie like you have and you will be met with sarcasm, lies and misinformation as no one will believe you. Your also making it hard for veterans to trust people who say their new..I'm sorry guys, don't pile on! You caught me, and it is exactly as I feared. A new player, like me, voice would not be heard. Note: Taking advice from a players alt, is like taking advice from a voice in a dark room. Criticism is a two way street remember that!!

People not seeing the sarcasm in OP claiming he was talking about himself is stunning.
I'm taking Lore way too seriously. And I'm not sorry about that.
