Modding the game

What are the rules in regard to modding FFXIV? Just cosmetic mods like hairstyle and makeup (that only I can see anyway), HD textures, etc?

I believe its no big deal as long as you keep it mostly to yourself and don't go bugging people about it. If I recall right, SE is in a bit of a grey area about this.

From official side, it's against ToS, since you change game files so you can be warned and banned for this.
Still, system does not really check files so you can be okay with mods as long as you don't mention that you use them in game and don't post your screenshots with modded items on Official Forum or in Social Networks with your game info and probably with SE copyright label. Hovewer, there are mods that I personally find kind of dangerous for company from copyright side: those items ported from other MMOs like BDO or B&S specifically. I'm not against modding as an idea but seriously, people should turn on their brain when they do things.

Don't do it. But since there is no anti cheat they have no way of catching you unless you admit to doing it in their chats and someone reports you.

Also, its at your own risk ; the game files are modified by the mods and it can make it so your game can't even start anymore and you have to reinstall everything.

Wait, does that mean I should be reporting 50% of people on the "Show your x!" forums, as some of them are clearly using modded shaders/textures in some of them.

I won't, but some harmless modders posting pics should be aware that someone could use it against them.

No mods at all are allowed. No exceptions.
However, it is unlikely anyone is actually going to care if you use purely cosmetic mods, but they are still technically against the rules.
