Being a foreign world which separated from the source eons ago and has evolved on its own ever since, I imagine the local wildlife is very different, too.
That raises the question...when I send my retainers out to find me something interesting, what kind of mutated, hideous crayfish are they going to bring back?
The retainer network is just that efficient.

Totally unfun answer: the gates we threw wide open.
Fun answer: I can totally see Greg setting up an interdimensional Catch-A-Ride! system for a small usage fee.
I recall Yoshi specifically mentioning this in an interview.
Not in a helpful explaining way, but more a "I wonder how your retainers will work heh heh heh" way.
Well, as my retainers are able to pull of things all by themself which not even I, the warrior of light, can do... Pretty sure they will find a way.
I wouldn't be surprised if retainers, rings of eternal bonding, and aetherytes all shared the same lore.
Normally when you want to teleport somewhere, you attune to an aetheryte first. Your retainers are waiting and ready for you at any summoning bell in any city or town, which raises the question - how do they get to you so fast?
I'm beginning to think that, in the lore, you can also attune to people for teleports.
My ilv 170 FSH retainer solos EX primals. Trust me. I'm not going to ask how they do what they do.
I have Aetheryte Earrings for a reason...
