The #1 thing that will get me to commend DPS is using their role actions effectively and doing mechanics. Yes damage is their primary role, but let's be honest, I shouldn't need to run a 3rd party tool to tell which of the two DPS are doing their job properly, and I usually have better things to do than watch their actions like a hawk to piece together whether they're doing their rotation properly or not. Still, using role actions and performing mechanics is not only more visible, it also shows they are trying and dedicated to doing what needs to be done for the good of their party. It's probably fair to say their DPS isn't that bad either, since if you care about the party you're probably more committed to making this a fast run than most of the DPS who pick the role to stay out of the spotlight.

I tend to give commendations to DPS if I notice them using role actions.

You would need to look at my wife's signatures. It's a rule, not a Law. You get far more at healer and tanks becuase many DPS want nothing to do with the rules so they are happy to reward people playing them just so they get to queue as the job they want.

If they do exceptional damage, I might give them a comm if they stick around long enough.

I don't care otherwise. You don't get medals for doing your job.

I commend tanks when I see them adjust to changing situations appropriately and actively try to maintain enmity when they lose it suddenly to a burst DPS.

I commend healers who can keep paper tanks alive through the worst of situations and can manage big pulls fluidly.

I commend DPS that know how to maintain their own entity while still maximizing their DPS and performing well.

It's all situational and having switched from PLD to BRD, I still do get comms routinely, it's just not as many. But then, I don't mind since I've already completed all the comm achievements.

And I care about getting commendations because? I main MCH and get commendations regularly, but I don't care if I get them or not. I play for fun. If I don't die or cause trouble, leave me alone. I just want to get through the dungeon, take my tomes and be done with it. Not sure why people place so much importance on commendations?

I absolutely 100% play DPS to stay about of the spotlight. I do my ROT well and pay attention to mechanics, but I don't want to tank and have that responsibility nor do I want to heal and have the lives of every party member on me. I play for fun and the story. The dungeon runs are just a necessity and I want to get in and out and be done with it.

Because DPS is hard to gauge outside of things like Goad, stuns, and mechanics (all things I'll commend for) they usually get my comm if the tank or healer were dropping the ball.

DJ Tank spinning mobs like records? Melee DPS comm for tolerating that.
Healer doesn't have any spells besides Cure on their bars? DPS comm.

Usually I just comm whoever I feel made the run go smoothest, so the above usually aligns with that.

I commend people when they follow the mechanics and do what they are suppose to, regardless of role.

I commend people (not just DPS, but any role) based on a list of exclusion rather than a ranking of who's best.

    If people annoy me because:

    -They're mean.
-They're not doing their job/role correctly.
-They're in a situation where they should know the mechanics, but fall into their traps anyway. I always cut first-timers some slack.
-They're technically doing what they're supposed to, but in a very inefficient manner. For example, plucking off enemies one by one from a huge mob as a single-target DPS while having full MP/TP and having obvious access to AOE abilities.

...then I cross their name off the list of candidates. Then, when the dungeon is over, I take whoever is left and do eeny meeny miny moe.

There are occasional exceptions, but they're not common. Stuff like healer lb3 without being asked, etc.
