Nowadays it's usually the only one who greets and writes gg/bye/thankyou at the end - or at least uses an relating emote - who will get my commending. Sadly, simple courtesy seem to be dead.

For me if all 3 roles performed well, it'll be Tank>Healer>Dps
Points are deducted if you don't pull multiple packs, don't dps as a healer or don't aggro manage/aoe as DPS, so the remaining role that didn't lose any points get the commend.

I commend the person who was the most influential in making the dungeon clear go fast. I don't limit myself to commending any person based on role. Sometimes it's a healer that not only keeps a tank alive, but adds considerable dps to killing trash. Sometimes it's a tank that pulls cleanly and with gusto, uses cooldowns, and makes life easier for healers and dps alike to maximize party jobs effectively. I'll even com dps who go above and beyond just looking to take care of themselves; this means using those role actions effectively to bring a swift conclusion to a dungeon. In short, I com people that deserve to be.
When I’m a tank, I’ll usualy commend a healer.
When I’m a healer, the DPS who gets my commend is the DPS I *didn’t* notice. If I didn’t notice you, it’s because you were where you were supposed to be doing what you were supposed to be doing.
When I’m a DPS, I’ll usually commend whoever partners with me on mechanics (dodges, tethers, buffs, or whatever else).

It's not uncommon for me to finish and exit a raid/dungeon/trial (as a healer) without commending anyone at all. Typically I go into them with certain expectations (the tank holds aggro on trash mobs, DPS uses AoEs when necessary, people stay out of enemy AoEs, etc.) I won't commendate people just for playing decently unless the rest of the party is utter garbage and they're the only other person who is legit not giving me a headache.
A DPS is more likely to get my commendation if I see them actually do mechanics and isn't face-tanking every avoidable thing. But that's my minimal criteria. Unless I'm having to constantly throw out raises/was killed, I don't expect Refresh/ Mana Shift- but when someone is throwing those out liberally (as necessary) I will take note. For that reason, Ranged DPS/Casters have an innate advantage for my comm.
If anything, I'm more critical of healers/my co-healer in deciding if they'll get the commendation, but by default it's usually in their favor simply due to the higher stress/awareness required for their role. But if I get paired with a 2nd AST composition and they don't overwrite my Expanded buff more than once (the 1st one I'll assume is an accident) and also heals in the opposite sect effectively, you'll be hard-pressed to earn that commendation over that other AST.
As a DPS my comms tend to go to the healers though, especially if I was healed through/Rescued/shielded for something I should have avoided/could have killed me. The only other time I can recall commendating another DPS is if both healers were just bad at staying alive/healing and if I can recall said DPS essentially avoiding as much unnecessary damage as possible or constantly having to raise the healers.
I never commend DPS.
A lot of people seem to have this attitude, which is why I almost always commend DPS (unless they are doing a terrible job...). I make it a policy never to commend anyone who blatantly asks for it however. If I hear a "Don't forget to commend your healers/tank! ^^" It's a sure way NOT to get my comm! lol

My issue with commending DPSes is that most of the time I honestly have no idea how well they did.
If they didn't do something to stand out, I don't know which one did better, and don't know who deserves it. Even more in eight-man content.
On the receiving end, I seem to get comms a lot while leveling black mage, presumably for getting the basic rotation right(ish).
Also the other night we had a new tank who wasn't picking up enemies properly, so I was targeting the enemies going for the healer. (I'd commend someone for the same thing if I was the healer.)
I wish you could indicate why you commended someone though. Just a few tickboxes like 'you played well', 'you gave good advice', or 'I like your costume'.
Same. Surefire way to lose my commendation if I just was about to give it to you.
By the same token, I don't like to commend the 'last person standing' just because they haven't left yet, if I didn't intend to give it to them otherwise.

As long as they are actually helping, or are new and trying I give it to my fellow DPS. If they constantly lag behind (non-cut scene reasons) or seem to just auto it goes to healer or tank.
