Avoiding Besaiders and Balmung

Dear Fabul,

I write to you a letter of caution when you are deciding your new home. Besaid is the unofficial Roleplay server for the FFXIV community. It has a much higher population of people who enjoy RP currently then any other server and will receive players transferring from other servers to Balmung in order to roleplay.

Most roleplayers will probably leave you alone but some will exclude you, some will make fun of you, some will kick you from party and some will shun people who do not roleplay. It's a fact, it happens to non-RP'ers on RP servers in every game. And it happens on Besaid currently. It's why most games label the servers RP. There are people who complain about the RP currently on Besaid and there are people on Besaid whom are glad that they can move to other servers. The only reason Besaid/Balmung isn't labeled RP now is because it wouldn't have enough population to support it.

You are free to make your own decision. Due to this and the above risk I've decided to avoid the Balmung server and decided to choose a more normal server for me and my group. Where as Balmung may be fine, there are many other fine servers that are just as good having all the positive elements that Balmung can offer and none of the negative elements. In other words FFXIV has a great culture and you will be welcomed anywhere just as much as you will be on Balmung. Personally for me, I don't really know if Balmung will be ok or not for non-RP but I just don't want to gamble on it. I'll just choose a normal server and continue to enjoy the current type of culture I've come to expect.

This is the level of civility and maturity that promotes more respectful responses and would have been greatly appreciated beforehand.

People on any server, in any game, can exclude or attack you for any reason. From the sound of a name, the way a person types, the gear, the class, performance, gender, skin tone, hobby, etc. A person who behaves in an unpleasant or inappropriate manner can occur from someone who does not role-play as easily as it can from someone who does role-play. People are people in the end.

This is the importance of the March 1 through March 19 transfer phase. The players who feel discriminated against or harbor strong feelings against role-playing have the opportunity to move to another server. As you've said, the players are free to make their own decision.

A concern of mine is that if your plea is heeded to where Balmung is stripped of its population. Balmung and/or the EU server may be given the opportunity to transfer to any of the other eight servers. And players from those eight servers may not get a chance to transfer away until 2.0.

(1) I've never seen any of this happen in the entire time that I've been playing MMORPG's (which is ten years now). I have however seen it happen on several occasions the other way around.

(2) Maybe it's coincidence, maybe it's not (correlation != causation, yada yada), but RP servers in most MMORPGs have almost always been some of the most populated servers for the games. Examples:

Moon Guard in WoW (All of the RP servers in WoW are pretty packed, actually, but MG is actually labeled 'Full')
Virtue in City of Heroes
Antonia Bayle in EQ2
Lumiel/Israphael in Aion
Landroval in Lord of the Rings Online

While I'm not suggesting anyone ignore the OP completely (some people really do have a severe aversion to RP of any sort), most people will be perfectly happy on Balmung. I would actually think it nice to be on a server where local chat isn't completely dead.

Well, I have nothing against Besaid or RP'ers in general.. but most likely for Besaid and Balmung you'll see a boon in RP so it's positive all the way around. RP is better when there is more RP right?

I feel that people should be warned tho.. The people who started on Besaid who did not know and did not like it didn't have the opportunity to leave until now. Eventually I hope that we do add a way to move between servers and add an official RP server. They say they will in 2.0 so this is an interm phase. Me I don't think I'd choose to start on a RP server given the opportunity so I'd like to know. I've played games that were 100% RP (true not in about 15 years but I've seen discrimination against people from the RP community.)

Whats said is said and there you go, you got the info and I know I'm not the only one who feels this way on Fabul so people should be aware, that's all I'm intending to accomplish with the post.

But since it's already back at the top, let me just say that Besaid isn't an "official" roleplay server. While there are probably some extremist RPers who make a point to "exclude" normal gamers, there is also a healthy population of non-RPers, and even anti-RPers who have gone through hell to exclude the RPers. Please, see the forums for a plethora of examples of all three groups.

Further, neither you nor I play on Besaid, so I don't understand how you can know anything you've said. It's speculation based on your experience from other games' RP servers, which were probably official RP servers and the behaviours you described were...possible, if not expected.

I speculate that, after Fabul+Besaid, the RPers will be the minority on Balmung. So it's they you should be concerned for, not yourself.

Oh no, there might be a tiny subset of players on Balmung with whom I never interact. What ever will I do? It's going to be so hard to get a party together for those 1000-person raids now.
