Would you accept consolidated gear for roles, if...

Each job had a different appearance for each gear?

For example, say they consolidate all the Strength gear (i.e. Striking and Maiming) into just a standardized Slaying set, but the appearance of the gear changes depending on whether you're Monk, Dragoon or Samurai?

Same with Aiming and Scouting gear, it all gets consolidated into Aiming or Precision gear, and the appearance of it changes depending on if you're a Ninja, Bard, Machinist or Dancer.

This would probably save them some time in some areas but not so much in others. It's not a bad idea though, at least in my opinion.

It would help for great progression for players, but considering so many players glamor over the items, it might not work out as well... also it might cause issues in cases where the appearance worked for a job like Black Mage, but then change to Red Mage and the item no longer works with the rest of the ensemble.

Personally, I'd accept fewer gear models, especially with consolidated gear, if it meant that we could get the two new races finished. (since gear modeling for so many races and sexes was a stated reason as to why we couldn't get both sexes of both races)

No because the stats would still be an issue. Case in point Caster gear where Spell Speed abounds in spite of being near useless to RDM but essential to BLM's and to a lesser extent SMN. Or healer gear where SCH needs crit like it's going out of style, but often times gear just doesn't have it unless you meld it yourself.

Unless they make the consolidated gear also have unique stats based on the class being played I'm gonna have to pass. We already have issues with gear not really being good for every class that it applies to, this would just make it worse unless it goes the extra mile.

But... Casters and Healers already share all their gears. I'm referring to the physical DPS jobs, who most have unique gear types.

Why should they change appearance based on who equips them though? This prevents people who want a piece of gear for glams from using that piece of gear for the glams.

And I'm mentioning why it's an issue, using examples that already exist in game. The system you want already causes issues. Unless they also implement unique stats /across the board/ to go along with it, I'd hate to see it implemented for melee classes as well.

To make each set of gear feel like it belongs to that class. There are some pieces that aesthetically look good on a Monk or Samurai, but wouldn't look good on the opposite. Same with Aiming gear, there's some that would probably look good on Bard, but doesn't fit the style of a Machinist.

I suppose, but at the same time, with TP being removed in 5.0, we might see Skill Speed being used more often, maybe. It could be useful on classes that generate resources on weaponskills (Paladin, Warrior, Dark Knight, Samurai) or auto-attacks (Ninja).

I would rather they divorce gear from glamor entirely, so I don't need to modify 3 gearsets every time something changes.
