Is this game worth putting time into?

So I'm a bit frustrated as the other day I purchased the game for 60 bucks and had to spend about an hour figuring out how to log in and actually buy it and play it. The whole store front and logging in from a trial to a non trial via square enix almost made me entirely give up. I finally got to play 2 days ago for a couple hours before going to bed after I had to completely redownload the game from my trial version to regular version (that made no sense why they decided to work trials like that). I got off work yesterday and went to play again and sure enough it was down for maint. So today me and my friend from work, whom also had to go through the same experience as I did, decided to sit down and play once again after work and the game is down again.

What I'm wondering is, is the game worth all this effort to play if I can't even play the game it seems. It feels like everything is a work around and both me and my friend agree that no other mmo has made you jump through so much just to get into the game. I've played every mmo on the market, saving this game for last because I heard it was a pain to get started, and I'm kind of shocked at how terrible my initial experience with the game has been so far.

Does it get better? Are these down times common? I've been playing final fantasy since I was a child, 20 years ago, but all this hassle is frustrating.

I sympathize with your frustration, April has been a busy month for Patches/Maintenance's and the patch4.57 World Transfer system is a biggie, it's something this game has never had before so it's going to go through some growing pains.

We haven't even gotten to the whole stress-testing FATE event yet, so it's likely to get bumpier from here on out before things improve.

But it will improve, it always does. And yes, it's worth it- at least for me it always has been worth the hoop-jumping, the emergency maintenance's, the down-time, it's all worth it in the end.

Looks like you just are unluckily choosing bad times to play.

As for sinking time into it, if you want to play this game on any level you are going to have to. Maybe, unless you buy the story skips. Personally, I think it is worth it, definitely. In my opinion, it is one of the few actual good MMO's out on the market right now. However, it was a themepark MMO, and a lot of people like to criticize it for not having action combat, or this and that (formulaic). Which I think isn't really a valid criticism, if you want action combat go play black desert, or something. There are other games out there that can feed that itch.

    They don't happen that often.
As for the game, I would like to give u an accurate response but I'll have to wait until shadowbringers to give one to u but it isn't looking like it's gonna be the best expansion till now that's for sure

No. This level of downtime is pretty unusual.

You just unknowingly picked a bad day to start. Normally servers only go down every few weeks or months for patches, and usually only for a few hours. This was a unique case of them shuffling entire servers and data centers around which is why the servers were down for so long, and presumably why they went back down again for emergency maintenance so quickly.
