You just have to know which rule it's using. That said, I've always preferred Tetra Master. That might get me to actually play the cards, even if it's tied to GS.

When you learn how Plus and Same works, it's really fun to do it against players. You can set a trap, and if they put their card in the very obvious trap, you can get Plus! Same! Combo combo combo! It feels great.Seriously. I love how I can be winning by 3 cards, and the AI goes 'I flip one, then make up this combo thing and flip 2 more, which then combos again to flip another one and then I call myself the grand Wizzlewazzle and flip every card you put down in the next 10 games you play against me.'
It really feels like the AI can just make up rules so they can win or draw whenever they want.
A part of me likes triple triad, and a part of me doesn't.
I did spend one night a few weeks ago just playing triple triad for hours.
But i dunno, i can get frustrated from that same deal you talked about OP.
It does take strategy and knowing what your opponent has to play around it.
I don't think(?) there is a one deck beats all type of thing.
But i'm a noob at TT so i wouldn't know.
Back in 1.x, when yoshda was asked if they were going to add triple triad, he answered it wasn't enough for a mmo.
And he was right........... triple triad was fine as a side-game in a 50h game like FF8, but it sure doesn't have the depth required to be played for hours.
There are ways to update it to actually create some sense of strategy (a cathedral burns each time a NPC uses the word "strategy" about TT) but it's FFXIV, and in FFXIV we never look back. Create mediocre content, and let it rot as we create even more content, faster, not better.
There are a lot of problems with Triple Triad, but "I didn't read the rules" isn't one of them. The tutorial area should clearly teach you how things like Same and Plus work, and if not there are tons of guides online for additional help.
The main issues with TT as it is right now are 4-star cards being mostly pointless, and abysmally low drop rates on NPC and trial drop cards.
I Triple Triad quite a bit but I can't say I enjoy the actual gameplay against NPCs, only the card collecting. Feels like every NPC I duel has the Chaos rule for some reason. If they don't have Chaos, they'll have Roulette which will land on Chaos. Pair this up with absurdly low drop rates on even the most basic of cards (on an alt I had do duel the Triple Triad tutorial NPC around 25-30 times for the 1* card to drop) and I can only think the person behind this mini-game is a complete sadist.
Plus/Same with the All Open or Three Open rule can be quite fun however. Finding patterns on NPC duelists and manipulating how they place their cards is also enjoyable.
I started disliking Triple Triad, but the more i played, and the higher my Deck limit rank increased, the more i am enjoying it.
It is obviously not doing to be for everyone, when Gold Saucer 1st launched and we got Triple Triad, it was meant to appeal to the Final Fantasy 8 fans mostly since that is where the mini-game is inspired from.

I really loved Triple Triad in FF8 and was a big fan of FF8 in general but I strongly dislike it here, so I'm not sure that's true. After 2-300 games on a single NPC, you stop enjoying TT for the game in itself.
I think it's meant to appeal to completionists who enjoy really long grinds.
Earlier today I was grinding out TT for the challenge log entries to get an alt the mgp for the Regalia....
Had the opponent do a plus and take over the whole board....
I then popped down one of my cards for same and stole the entire board back. :P
The house always wins...Seriously. I love how I can be winning by 3 cards, and the AI goes 'I flip one, then make up this combo thing and flip 2 more, which then combos again to flip another one and then I call myself the grand Wizzlewazzle and flip every card you put down in the next 10 games you play against me.'

I try and avoid the card and domino game, they make no sense to me.
Concerning the very thing that brought us to The Golden Saucer today, I've just said "sour grapes" after seeing the price of the car.
