The way things begins, we can be basically have any origin story.

Heck we can even have one where we are from another world/reality/dimension.

They really leaves thing open for "anything is possible but we just don't talk about it" scenario

I will not be surprised if they manage to introduce a Origin Story Side-quest storyline that it may have multiple path based on our character dialogue choice for their origin.

Though that maybe fun since GW2 played on a Origin Storyline for their character though rather limited with end results it was nice little thing to touch for the player characters.

I think they've disavowed origin-type quests in interviews before, because they'll never be able to give enough freedom to satisfy people, and the limitations that would by necessity be put in would only serve to disappoint them.

I've heard that too. It makes sense to leave it up to the player where their character originated. It's just that the beginning gives the impression that you know nothing about where you are travelling.

In the end, it appears I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.

For my backstory, I grew up in Cedarwood. My family grew citrus trees and sold the fruit to sailors.

Same to Raen. Xaela got their 51 tribes in the Azim Steppe. Raen are spread all over the place. Except those who lives under the sea in a pineapp... eh... Sui-No-Sato.
Its kinda sad, that there nothing like a "home" for most races. I would like to see the Dunesvolk homeland. In the first lore book there was a part which says, that those Lalafell are living on big creatures in the desert ^^.

I would also like to see other kinds of culture or religions (or even other naming conventions). Look at Goetsu for example. He is definitely a Roegadyn, but he looks different and doesnt have a typical Roegadyn name. Or Krile. Or Hilda.

Who said they need to be very specific?

They can easily still make a origin Side storyline quest very abiguous still by not allowing us go into the deeper details of things but give starting options such as..

    1) Not from around here -> Lead to New Lands. (No one knows who you are or where you are from in Eorzea)

    2) Returning home -> Lead to The Return Path (Story path where you get meet people who may say they saw you before but don't remember)

    3) Not from the world -> Lead to Strange Rifts Path (story path that leads to discovering strange rifts that brought WoL to Eorzea from another World/Dimension/Reality/or Shard)

and then once on the chosen story path everytime someone try to ask about deeper details the story gets interrupted for story reasons or zooms out for a short time skip to let players imagine what they said similar to what happens sometimes in Cutscenes when they want to skip details of certain point in Main and side storylines.

I don’t see what the point of that would be. An “origin story” that deliberately avoids actually revealing anything of the character’s origins?

It would frustrate people who want their character to have a past established by the story (because it still tells them nothing, but highlights it), and probably changes nothing for the players who are already imagining their own backstory - or possibly still frustrates them because those fragments of information aren’t what they’re imagining either.

Having the game set up a “returning home” plot that highlights the idea of people not recognising my character would be entirely wrong for me. She isn’t one of the lost heroes from 1.0; her story starts where my gameplay did, in ARR. People in Gridania know her, and while of course the game won’t reflect that, it’s different to have actual game script of people saying they maybe met her but can’t remember.

All the Far Eastern Roegadyn (and Hyurans) follow the same Japanese naming pattern as Raen Au Ra. Gosetsu doesn’t stand out.

And Hilda is following normal Midlander naming rules - as are other Hyuran Ishgardians like Joye and Symme. It doesn’t matter that the majority of the population have fancy pseudo-French names - those are Elezen names only, and Hyurans don’t use them.

Krile is explained as having been adopted, so she doesn’t follow Lalafell naming tradition (although apparently her name is Kururu in Japanese, but as it’s a reference to another game they’ve kept the equivalent translation over the more appropriate original).

For me... I have a few different characters, with different backgrounds.
My Xaela is from the Plains, so yeah, he is not from Eorzea but has learned to deal with Eorzean style of behavior (and likes it more).

I have a "Garlean Pureblood" who is a traitor and had no dealings in Eorzea, so he has trouble at times dealing with the high aether.

My other characters may come from outskirts, but never get into their exact origins and my Viera, once they come out, was raised by Pirates, so the sea is her home.

.. Then there is my 1.0 character, who didn't come from Eorzea even originally, but an area that got occupied by Garlemald (cause Duskwight), got amnesia during 1.0, got his memory back nearly the end of 1.0... fought in the calamity, got swooped away by the light-- and is just kinda the cosmic chew toy at this point in his life (and he hates it). xD

Edit: And my lion boy is gonna be a slave to an underground battle arena-- and will eventually get freed... and won't really know how to speak. So, that is gonna be a thing.

I like that they leave it open to personal exploration. It makes your character feel more unique when you can create your own origin story. I also like that the first lore book loosely and I mean VERY loosley mentions their being other tribes for certain races like the Elezen, which means if you don't feel like you fit in with one of the 2 sects we get, you can make your own. I like to think Hax hails from a long lost Elezen clan that defected and went out into the desert or one of the islands around Thavnair. Gives a little more flavor and helps to make him a little more unique than your average High House Ishgardian Elf.

This idea is the most interesting. I could tell everyone I'm from Cornelia.
