Yoshi-P said it's actually up to us to where our WoL comes from.
I like to say my au ra is from a hidden underwater village in the Ruby Sea.
From a RP perspective it's nice to have a solid origin for a character, so I know where all of mine come from. Though I also ignore the msq in my RP. None of my characters are 'warriors of light' or have the echo etc.
My character comes from one of the islands of the Cieldalaes which, as far as I can tell, comes within Limsa Lominsa's sphere of influence, but isn't offically a part of the thalassocracy. The Cieldalaes are near enough that it's not inconceivable that my character would know something about Eorzea but remains, for intents and purposes, a foreigner to the realm.
My character is Ishgardian, so I guess from their isolation it makes sense she'd be unfamiliar with Gridania when I first arrived there at level 1.
RP is going to ignore most of the MSQ for your character anyway, since it's not like every single person can go through all those events. Disregarding the "you're from outside Eorzea" isn't a big deal.
I think of it as something easy to write for people who are indeed fresh to XIV's story and world. My RP characters have a backstory, but I choose to ignore the MSQ altogether because their lives are not the lives of the WoL. The story is more about the world around the WoL and he/she is just helping out because people are helpless babies otherwise with exception far in between. The people writing scenarios in the office are not the same kind of team that writes the 100 branching paths of Bioware games or VNs. Keep it simple.
Cave people and criminals.
The way I've always phrased it to people asking about it is:
It is canon that (everyone assumes that) you are a foreigner to Eorzea (but how would they know?).
tl;dr Yeah, it's true that Eorzeans believes that, but sometimes Eorzeans are wrong. Do what you want. They left that door cracked on purpose.
"I shall refrain from making any further wild claims until such time as I have evidence."

The one W' tribe member I've found also happens to be well-tanned and blonde, so I've taken to a headcanon that there's a tribe of migratory surfer cats chasing the best waves along the coast of Vylbrand.
It has yet to be disproven, at least.
あっきれた。
Fun fact: There are W' clan members in the alchemist class quests for ARR. Both are what I would call 'tanned' but one has pink hair, and the other has red. Not that this proves or disproves anything :P
Originally I didn't have much of a history for my characters, but they started getting more developed after the first Encyclopaedia was released. I kinda called it that the Miqo'te X Tribe was in Ala Mhigo, cause my alt (X'Talo) was originally a survivor from an X Tribe Settlement pre-Stormblood... and then the RDM Quest Giver is from the Ala Mhigan X Tribes...
Though there's a pretty good chance that her history is gonna get retconned once I get my hands on the Benchmark and Hrothgar. I'm only disappointed that the Keepers don't have more feral/wild looking options right now...
