Gabranth in Ridorana [Spoilers for Ridorana Lighthouse and Orbonne Monastery]

Me and a friend of mine were discussing this and we realized it was hard to pinpoint the exact events that led to the epilogue of Orbonne Monastery, which made us believe there was a continuity error.

Basically, after finishing Orbonne, we're shown Noah van Gabranth and a legion (presumably the 4th Legion he controls) studying the technology in Goug. He takes an interest in Construct 7's Tartarus system when analyzing its remains. But how did he even get there? And why?

Originally we were under the impression someone had spied on us, but there weren't any likely candidates for espionage. Plus, there was no mention of Gabranth approaching the lighthouse, and he didn't know he would find anything of value there. At the moment no one would probably be paying much attention to the surrounding technology and have the foresight to relay that info to him. We also suggested he could have been pursuing Ba'gamnan himself, since he was a Dalmascan knight serving under Ashe and going around searching for a power stone (which given the recent uprisings in Rabanastre, he wouldn't stand for it), but if he was, he would likely get there much sooner than we see him.

Then we considered maybe Gabranth got there before us. It would explain how he knew about Tartarus, since he could have seen us fight the Construct. But we saw no signs of an imperial legion in the place, and agreed it was silly to have him sneakily hiding around the tower and watch us like a creepy stalker. Plus, it implies he had knowledge on Goug and the Lighthouse beforehand, which not even our party knew existed.

So how did Gabranth know about Goug, get there, climb all the way up for the part with lost tech, find the remains of Construct 7 and know about Tartarus?
It just seems oddly convenient, as though he was shoddily added in for the sake of a cameo. And considering how it's set up to be used in later content, it seems oddly shoehorned in. So either we're missing some details, or Gabranth's presence in Goug to retrieve the Tartarus system is out of place with the narrative.

Actually there was a 'spy' of sorts, or more like a 'traitor'. One of the members of The Majestic Imperial Theatre Company (aka Prima Vista group), the NPC known as the 'Company Thespian', displays an increasing ire towards you going on throughout the raid story, as well as a belief that the Empire, despite its flaws, would be able to use the technology of Goug, the Garleans apparent ancestors, to bring order. When things come to a head and you need to head off to Orbonne, he disappears during the hustle (specifically he is no longer on the ship after beating the raid), only to reappear in the cut-scene you describe, having defected, or returned, to Garlemald (specifically the IVth legion) with the information on Goug gathered by Jenomis. Watch it again, it focuses on him for a good moment so you can realize the truth. He is the guy with the fancy hat, skin-tight pants, and face tattoo.

For some reason, none of the other members of the MITC ever address his disappearance, even after the end of the raid story.

I would have missed him if they didn't subtly nudge you to keep an eye out in the first quest, lol.

I’m really interested in this potential story branch but I have no idea how Gabranth will fit in the expansion. Will he be a part of the main scenario for Shadowbringers or will he be stuck in a side story similar to the Chronicles of a New Era? Either way, I’m excited because I am a fan of Gabranth.

Maybe it'll tie into the YoRHa story, or the Trial story whatever this expansion's version of hte four lords/warring triad ends up being.

I noticed that guy, but I guess I didn't realize what he was doing.

I remember following that guy's dialogue the entire raid and thinking he was a good example of what most people in Garlemald probably think about Garlemald and the countries it is conquering. And then it turned out he wasn't on the Prima Vista when it was time to turn in the last raid quest and I panicked a bit because I really wanted to know what he thought about the whole thing. The panicking turned out the be completely justified afterwards...

Getting to see the NPC dialogue of the Return to Ivalice quests is one of the reasons I'm really happy we'll be getting New Game +. It's in my top five quest lines to redo just to reread (and screenshot) the NPC dialogue.

I think we will see him in 6.0 when we will go free the city of Dalmasca.

I would love to see the look on those poor garlean fools when they realize they are not descendants of ivalice.
