Using their size as reasoning is pointless, as real live axes and great swords were nowhere near as big and wide, but this is a fantasy game so obviously everything will be exaggerated to look appealing. Weapons like these wouldn't be used for "crushing" in real life - they just wouldn't be used at all due to how unwieldy and slow they'd be.
Given that fact that their was no real way to get so ripped to the point where 1 person could actually use them no problem in medieval times, you are right... but with the introduction of steroids in modern day, and this is a fantasy game that has mecha as trash mobs and the occassional boss or 12, and Roegadyn look like they have been hitting the gym to the point where they might as well be living in said gym(maybe they took some steroids as well), and most armor would be tough to crack open without a piercing weapon like a polearm unless you got lucky and with a sword and got the vulnerable spot, because I am pretty sure that if Roegadyn were real, those swords and axes that are as big and wide as a normal sized person in ye olde times... well if you have heard have anime/manga called Berserk you would probably have an idea of what to expect...
