a topic entirely about semantics

Regardless of what you call it, the point people are making remains the same. Everyone understands what the issue is, which is that people had every reason to expect to be able to select either gender on any game race based on past precedent, and yet the devs made the decision to go against everything they’ve done thus far and limit each race to a single gender. This is now colloquially being referred to as genderlock, and no it’s not a counter argument, nor is it particularly clever to pedantically insist that “you can’t lock something that doesn’t exist”. If you are actively in favor of or flat out don’t care about limiting races in this way, that’s fine and it’s no more valid or invalid than anyone else’s position, but if you think you’ve completely unraveled the position of those who want Male Viera and female hrothgar by pedantically arguing semantics, you’re sadly mistaken.
Or it's being referred to as genderlock, because despite people knowing it's wrong, it's fine for the purpose of adding controversy and drama to this and putting more pressure on the devs.
Well, no. It's exactly that a race has just one option, period. It's not locked into that one option, because no other options are locked out. It's just a single-gender race option.Almost as if a race is LOCKED to one gender option.
i mean if they don't got enough manpower they should hire more peoplI'm seeing all sorts of stuff about "gender lock" on the two new races, as if SE is purposefully withholding content from us, and that female Hrothgar and male Viera exist as playable races, but are "locked" from us.
The thing is, making another gender of an existing race is the same amount of work as making a single gender of a new race. You can't just slap boobs on a hrothgar and call it female, you have to make an entirely new model, and you have to match existing gear to it, you have to make all the new customization options, and the list of things just goes on.
The fact is, it takes the same amount of manpower and effort to make a single race with two genders as it does to make two races with a single gender.
They did not have the manpower to make two races with two genders. They've told us this, and they've said that because they wanted to include hrothgar, a concession had to be made.
Yes, I do believe the other genders should be created. But no, I don't believe there's any locking, malice, personal attacks on sexuality, or anything of that nature that I've seen in the general hubbub that is these forums.
We got a nice thing. We had to lose another nice thing to get it. I'd say have patience, and that the extra genders will come eventually.
It is nice to see someone actually understands the situation and isn't jumping to ridiculous conclusions.

I tried to tell ppl that we got 2 new races instead of just 1 with both genders and SE is meeting more audience with that, but that just gets ignored.
Im not able to play PLD/WAR/DRK/WHM/SCH/AST/MNK/DRG/NIN/SAM/BRD/MCH/BLM/SMN/RDM/BLU as a existing male Viera, which nobody has seen before (because the great wood said so). So, I am only able to play all jobs as a female Viera, which describes genderlock perfectly for me.
Dunno why you try to revolutionize "genderlock". But even if people would stop calling it genderlock, the reason stays the same. People want the opposite genders added.
The whole thing will make a great study in Marketing and PR in the next 10 years
Particularly when considering the difference between Japan and The West.
Developers never lied, but they never clearly said outright that certain things weren't coming. They need to be clearer about content and fans expectations. We had it really good for years so the bar continues to rise beyond expectation, at some point the bar is going to be unobtainable. For a good chunk of the playerbase that happened at the last FanFest. Hopefully they learn from this.

SE and the players hopefully learn from this.
The unrealistic expectations some ppl have and the unclear reveals from SE was a really bad mix.
I see 2 big announcement issues in the last fanfests.
1. Blu as a job, they should have called it something else and not job.
2. Viera without the clear "female only" info.
