I am not saying it doesn't happen. I am saying most actual Roleplayers do not want to be associated with that kind of moron in any way, and would never act that way themselves.
By all means, I know a lot of RPers don't do that kinda of stuff, but as the OP stated, he was getting hate for tying skills to yells.
Even when in a place like Limsa, if someone spams the chat, it's usually followed by a blacklist. My chat is gunked up with bots, FC chat, and other stuff - really don't need to be seeing it. That being said, I know that the majority of RPers are RPing in the public chats.
The whole party sound macros was and still is a completely different set of annoyances, but yes i can imagine that sort of behavior is what made a lot of it intolerable. I think i remember some or most of that type of thing happening a lot in Castrum Meridianum; the Dungeon i wager most players lived in for quite awhile- i know i did. XD
I'm always looking through the lens of rose-tinted-glasses with this game, so there is a group of people out there still doing that kind of stuff and annoying the heck out of the people (the over-usage of macro sounds i mean; and probably lots of text) - i am simply just not aware of it anymore.
I fish a lot these days. These long quiet days. *sighs*
