Overall a little confused...

Hi All,

I'm new to the game. I took the plunge a few weeks ago in anticipation of shadowbringers and have really been enjoying it.

I have a couple questions though.

1. Poetic Tombstones - What do I do with these things? My Astrologian is up to 63, I already have the Shire gear. I'm maxxed out again and feel like I should be spending them on something, but can't really find anything that's an upgrade to them. Is there no more point to these?

2. The weapon for an Astrologian - He doens't really have auto attack. So what does the weapon actually do? Aside from the stats on it, nothing? Does weapon damage for spell casters affect damage?

3. Dungeon Gear - I love running dungeons, they're just a fun way to get experience and, as a healer, really makes my class worth playing. Beyond that though, what's the point of all the junk gear? I mean, I bought the shire gear awhile ago, I run level 60 dungeons (I just started Stormblood last night, no dungeons yet, so maybe things change...), and the drops are all garbage. How does the gear loop work in this game? Is dungeon gear just trash?

4. End game - Largely what do you do once you hit max level (I'll google this, but if anyone has any quick hitters to supply, cool.)?

1. The tombstones were for post ARR MSQ raiding gear. As for what they're used for in HW and SB I'm not sure myself.

2. They do have an auto attack, you just have to be standing right next to an opponent and they'll hit them with the book. Other than that the stats typically boost magic potency and spell speed.

3. Most regular dungeon gear is primarily for glamouring. You can use some of it if it matches your level.

4. Max level is grinding for maxed raid gear in preperation for new content.

So basically at this time -

1. Don't worry about the poetics. They largely do nothing.
2. Cool on the auto attack! I haven't noticed it working for all my leveling lol!
3. I'll have to look into glamoring. So many little subsystems in this game, that I have no idea.
4. Got it on max level.

Just wanted to correct an error I made, for some reason I thought you said Arcanist when you said Astrologian. They still have an auto attack, they smack enemies with their hand when in close not a book. My bad

tomestones are more for just buying weapons/armor. there are vendors that sell a variety of older crafting items and other things related to older relic questlines. plus if you get into desynthesis you can use your tomestones to buy that extra armor/accs/weapons to desynth when you get your desynth levels up that high.

If nothing else, you can spend your poetics on "demicrystals" in Idyllshire, which you can then sell for gil.

Or buy gear and hand it into your GC for seals, which can be spent on things like ventures and glamour prisms.

(Worth mentioning, it's not tombstones but tomestones, as in tome = book. Functionally they seem to be something like an ancient magical USB drive full of information.)


And glamouring is *definitely* worth looking into! If you haven't unlocked it yet, the quest can be done in either Vesper Bay or Mor Dhona. (Also you'll want to unlock dyeing your gear, which I think is only at Vesper Bay.)

You can apply glamours directly using prisms, but it's more worthwhile to play around with the "glamour dresser" at the inn, which will let you set up full costumes that you can apply to your gear all at once.

And - worth mentioning if you hadn't realised - you're able to turn off hats at any time, if you don't want it visible. There should be a button underneath your picture in the Character menu.

I wanted to make a correction to this, since It doesnt look like anyone else caught it. AST auto attack damage is considered slashing damage, they are attacking with a card not just their hand. That makes AST and RDM the only mages that deal slashing damage.
