And, by community, what I mean is something other than entering a random dungeon full of people I don't know, where all they do is fight and argue over gear, and I end up being the only one trying to pry them apart and keep everyone from ruining the entire run.

It seems we had very different experiences with WoW's dungeon finder.

Most of the time me and my guild would form a 3-4 man party and then jump into the queue which meant you would have people you new doing this content with you, if you were the party leader you had the option to kick obnoxious players (even being able to vote on the process)

Yes people will be greedy with loot that happened in FF11 also and did in FF14 with DH runs prior to materia.

Perhaps you are right in that cross server play does add a sense of anonymity where people can be rude and greedy and get away with it, but I think its a matter of taking the rough with the smooth, some random people were just as nice as others who were just as vile.
